Lanterns, an upcoming live-action DC Universe series featuring the Hal Jordan and John Stewart Green Lanterns, has been described by DC Studios as being similar to HBO's anthology drama series, True Detective.

Following the unveiling of the first part of the DCU, DC Studios co-chairs and co-CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran have shared additional details about Lanterns, including that it will feature both Hal Jordan and John Stewart as Green Lanterns. Speaking with DC.com, Safran and Gunn described the upcoming HBO Max series as "more of a True Detective-type mystery with our two Lanterns. A terrestrial-based mystery that leads into the overall story that we’re telling throughout the different movies and television shows. We find this ancient horror on Earth, and these guys are basically supercops on 'Precinct Earth.'"

Greg Berlanti's Green Lantern Series Has Been Scrapped

Lanterns will replace Greg Berlanti's previously in-development Green Lantern series, which has reportedly been scrapped in favor of Lanterns. Berlanti's live-action Green Lantern series was first announced in 2019 but struggled to emerge from development hell with the project getting a massive creative overhaul in 2022. When the project was first announced, the series was described as a decades-spanning story that would focus on a "multitude of other Lanterns — from comic book favorites to never-before-seen heroes." Alan Scott, the first Green Lantern, and Guy Gardner, the ultra-macho Green Lantern, were later chosen as leads but were replaced by John Stewart during the creative overhaul. At this time, it is unknown if any of the DNA from Berlanti's show will make its way into Lanterns.

In addition to Lanterns, Gunn and Safran announced four additional DCU series: Creature Commandos, an animated series written by Gunn that will bring back The Suicide Squad's Weasel; Waller, a live-action series starring Viola Davis' A.R.G.U.S. officer Amanda Waller that takes place between Peacemaker Seasons 1 and 2; Paradise Lost, a political drama set on Themyscira before the events of Gal Gadot's Wonder Woman movies; and Booster Gold, about the glory-seeking superhero from the future.

Superman: Legacy to Kick Off DCU Film Slate

Gunn's previously announced Superman film -- now titled Superman: Legacy -- will be the first DCU project to hit theaters, with an expected opening on July 11, 2025. Four additional movies were also unveiled, which will comprise the first half of Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters. They include an adaptation of The Authority, a superhero team mainly composed of Warren Ellis-created characters from Stormwatch; a new Batman film -- The Brave and the Bold -- focusing on Batman discovering he has fathered a son, Damian Wayne, with Talia al Ghul; Supergirl: World of Tomorrow; and Swamp Thing, which will be a horror film set in the DCU.

Lanterns does not have a release date at this time.
