Outside of Bailey being confirmed as Ariel, no other roles have been officially cast. Speculation continues about Melissa McCarthy playing Ursula, Javier Bardem as King Triton and Daveed Diggs as Sebastian. Up-and-coming actors like Harry Styles and Krypton's Cameron Cuffe were originally rumored for the role of Prince Eric. Styles ultimately backed out of the part, leaving it open for Hauer-King to step in.

In addition to A Dog's Way Home, Hauer-King has appeared in TV adaptations of Little Women and Howard's End. His past credits also include World on Fire, The Song of Names, Ashes in the Snow and Postcards from London. His next projects include Once Upon a Time in Staten Island and Agatha and the Curse of Ishtar.

Directed by Rob Marshall and starring Halle Bailey, The Little Mermaid does not yet have a release date.
