The world under the sea may soon welcome a very imposing figure to its ranks. Renowned actor Javier Bardem is reportedly in final talks to join the upcoming Disney live-action reboot The Little Mermaid as none other than King Triton himself.

Bardem is perhaps best known for his villainous roles as Silva in Skyfall and Anton Chigurh in No Country for Old Men, a role for which he won an Oscar. Bardem is also slated to star in Blade Runner 2049 director Denis Villeneuve’s upcoming adaptation of Frank Herbert’s Dune.

King Triton is the father of Ariel in the original Disney version of The Little Mermaid. The character plays a critical role in the film, grooming Ariel (Halle Bailey) for life under the sea while she longs to walk on the surface among humans and, of course, one very handsome prince.

The rift between father and daughter leads Ariel to seek the aid of the sea witch Ursula, who gives the young mermaid everything she ever wanted… for a price. Given his track record with both paternal and sinister characters, Bardem might end up being the perfect fit for the King Triton role.

Directed by Rob Marshall and starring Halle Bailey, The Little Mermaid does not yet have a release date.
