The live-action version of The Little Mermaid will be making some changes, especially with how the film approaches Ariel.
Speaking to Variety, Daveed Diggs, who will voice Sebastian the crab in the new film, hinted at how the film will change the character of Ariel for a modern audience.
"It's different. It's great. Some of the updates they have done to the story are really important in terms of giving some more power back to Ariel," he said. "It's fun to work on something that is so intentional in the idea that, if we are going to make this now -- if we are not going to leave this alone as a time capsule -- let's make it for now."
News regarding the live-action little mermaid has been scarce. In July, the studio cast Halle Bailey as Ariel. In November of that same year it found its Prince Eric in Jonah Hauer-King. Aside from Diggs, no other cast members have been confirmed, but rumors are swirling as to who will portray King Trident, Ursula and Flounder.
Directed by Rob Marshall, The Little Mermaid stars Halle Bailey, Jonah Hauer-King and Daveed Diggs. The film does not yet have a release date.
