Lionsgate is heading to the "Borderlands," Variety reports, with an adaptation of the popular video game series produced by "Spider-Man's" Avi Arad and his son Ari Arad.

Developed by Gearbox Software and published by Take-Two Interactive, "Borderlands" is a role-playing first-person shooter game set on the frontier planet of Pandora, which has been abandoned by the Dahl Corporation. Gamers can select one of a handful of playable characters, and set out on missions.

Debuting in 2008, the "Borderlands" franchise has sold more than 26 million copies worldwide, with 2012's "Borderlands 2" accounting for half of those.
