Mega City One isn't the only place Judge Dredd can call home these days, as the one-man judge, jury and executioner's upcoming big screen revival is coming courtesy of Lionsgate Entertainment -- in the United States, at least.

Variety reports that Lionsgate has acquired the domestic distribution rights for Dredd, the adaptation of the popular 2000 AD comic book character starring Karl Urban in the title role and Olivia Thirlby as trainee Cassandra Anderson. Pete Travis is directing from a script written by Alex Garland, with concept illustrations provided by Jock.

Dredd moves into production in Cape Town, South Africa on November 12, shooting on a $45 million budget that's already nicely accounted for thanks to more than $30 million already made in foreign commitments. Stuart Ford's IM Global, which represents Dredd, established many of these sales at the Toronto Film Festival in September.

In addition to Dredd, Lionsgate has picked up distribution rights for two other IM Global features, Safe and Protection. Safe, currently shooting with Jason Statham in a starring role, will be Lionsgate's first release of the acquired films. Protection, starring Dwayne Johnson, begins production next March in New Mexico.
