Note: This post was revised Tuesday evening to reflect Lionsgate’s denial of the original report.
Contrary to a report earlier today by Twitch, Lionsgate insists that Fright Night director Craig Gillespie is still attached to Pride and Prejudice and Zombies. Twitch has removed its original story, which a studio representative called “completely false.”
An adaptation of Seth Grahame-Smith’s bestselling 2009 parody novel, Pride and Prejudice and Zombies sets Jane Austen’s characters in a Regency-era England where the undead roam the countryside. Elizabeth Bennett and her four sisters live on a country estate, where their father trains them to be martial arts and weapons experts as their mother works to marry them off to wealthy suitors. The book was a smash hit, kicking off the mash-up trend that spawned Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, Android Karenina, Queen Victoria: Demon Hunter and similar works.
Gillespie was confirmed to direct in April, succeeding David O. Russell and Mike White on the project. Gillespie reportedly has collaborated with Fright Night writer Marti Noxon on a new draft of the script.
While numerous actors, from Natalie Portman and Scarlett Johansson to Anne Hathaway and James McAvoy, have been connected to the film, only Dominic Cooper has signed on (as Mr. Darcy). The Amazing Spider-Man star Emma Stone was offered the lead in June, but passed.
