Another day, another $1 billion movie for Disney. The Lion King has officially crossed the billion dollar mark at the worldwide box office.
This marks the fourth Disney flick to achieve that milestone this year, following the likes of Captain Marvel, Avengers: Endgame and Aladdin -- with the latter having only done so just four days ago. The Lion King managed to push past $1 billion in just 19 days, with a reported $999.4 million leading into today. A majority of the box office, unsurprisingly, hails from international markets, with a stunning $638.5 million and $360.9M domestically.
The Lion King is now Disney's second live-action remake this year to hit $1 billion this year, following Aladdin. It is the sixth live-action Disney overall to accomplish said feat, behind 2017's Beauty and the Beast, 2010's Alice in Wonderland and the Pirates of the Caribbean films Dead Man's Chest and At World's End.
Despite mixed reviews, The Lion King has continued to impress since its release in early July. In fact, the film opened to an incredible $185 million at the domestic box office earlier this month. It remains to be seen just how far The Lion King will go, but one thing is for sure: it's not slowing down just yet.
Currently in theaters, director Jon Favreau's The Lion King features the voices of Donald Glover, Seth Rogen, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Alfre Woodard, Billy Eichner, John Kani, John Oliver, Florence Kasumba, Eric André, Keegan-Michael Key, JD McCrary, Shahadi Wright Joseph, Beyoncé Knowles-Carter and James Earl Jones.
