The Dragon Ball franchise undoubtedly has some of anime's most beloved characters. Their designs are iconic and plenty of fans continue to choose them as their favorite characters, even after seeing plenty of other anime. But over the course of the series, some Dragon Ball characters that were once fan-favorites became widely disliked.

There are a number of reasons for this, ranging from what happened during a fight scene to how they micro-manage everyone around them. While some fans might still love them, for others they've become the butt of many jokes in the Dragon Ball community.

10 Yajirobe Runs From Training So He Can Avoid Fighting

Yajirobe slices off Great Ape Vegeta's tail in Dragon Ball Z

Yajirobe is a unique character who's unlike anyone else in Dragon Ball. He's not weak, but he doesn't resemble a fighter at all either. He easily knocks out someone Goku is having trouble with and cooks one of King Piccolo's kids for a meal.

But the further the show goes on, the more it's explained that Yajirobe doesn't like to fight or train at all. He barely ever trains and prefers to hide from any threatening enemies. By the end of the Saiyan Saga, Yajirobe isn't seen anywhere and all he does is deliver Senzu Beans.

9 Shenron's Powers Are Ill-Defined, Which Drag The Story Down

shenron with the dragon balls

When he's first introduced, Shenron is a cool concept. After finding the Dragon Balls, Shenron is summoned and capable of granting any wish someone wants. But everything goes wrong at the start of the Saiyan Saga.

When the Saiyans are on their way, Krillin says they should ask Shenron to simply wish the Saiyans to not come to Earth. Fans learn that Shenron's limit is affecting beings that are stronger than him. From here, the limitations of the Dragon Balls become more and more obvious, even as the series constantly bends the rules for the purpose of the story.

8 Caulifla Didn't Have To Work To Attain Her Super Saiyan Forms

Super Saiyan 2 Caulifla deflects an energy attack in Dragon Ball Super

Caulifla is what fans have wanted since the very beginning: a female Saiyan. When she and her partner Kale were introduced, fans got their wish. But there was just one problem: the way Cabba taught her how to go Super Saiyan. While Cabba had to transform the old-fashioned way by having anger take him to a new level, things worked differently for Caulifla.

For her, she's able to transform into Super Saiyan by feeling a "tingle" in her back. To make matters worse, she masters Super Saiyan 2 after seeing it only once, making her feel like a character who doesn't put in an effort to keep up with everyone.

7 Yamcha Becomes A Joke To The Story

Yamcha saluting and pointing

Fans didn’t necessarily grow to hate Yamcha, but he did become a meme over time. When he made his first appearance, he was a desert bandit who was able to keep pace with Goku. But by the time the show gets to the Saiyan Saga, he's taken out by a single Saibaman, a group of aliens that even the Saiyans mock for being weak.

From there, despite Yamcha being stronger than any regular human, he's never able to keep up with anyone again. It gets to the point where he just quits martial arts and becomes the best baseball player in the world.

6 Jiren Isn't A Character With Much Depth To Him

This is the Ultimate Battle of All Universes! Son Goku vs Jiren!!

When Jiren first appears, he feels like the perfect opponent for Goku. He's got a great design and so much power that he ignores Goku's Super Saiyan forms until he transforms into his Super Saiyan God form. But the longer he sticks around, the more fans realized there was literally nothing to his character.

Even when he gives his backstory, he doesn't have much more depth added to him. The most interesting thing about him after that is wondering who could be powerful enough to defeat someone as strong as Jiren not only once, but twice.

5 Supreme Kai Never Did His Research About The Mortals On His Side

Kaioshin Supreme Kai vs Goku

The Supreme Kai is introduced at the start of the Buu Saga during the latest World's Martial Arts tournament. He forces Piccolo to bow out of the tournament early and freezes Gohan in place to allow Spopo to drain his energy.

He seems like he understands what he's doing until they reach the area where Majin Buu is to be revived. There, fans learn he actually doesn't have any idea how to deal with Buu — and worse, he's consistently shocked at how powerful Goku and the others are. Despite all his power and knowledge, he's done no research into his potential allies.

4 Gohan Abandons His Training For School & Studies

Gohan in Dragon Ball Super

Fans have had a split opinion on Gohan ever since the Buu Saga aired. The character was frustrating in the Saiyan Saga, a young child who didn't have the fighting spirit of his dad. But he grew into his own during the Cell Saga and defeated Cell when no one else had the strength to do so.

But the character got progressively weaker, and by the Buu Saga, Vegeta has outpaced him. He can't even finish Buu off correctly after having his hidden power unlocked by the Old Kai. And by Dragon Ball Super, he's barely able to go Super Saiyan, turning him into a massive disappointment.

3 Goku Keeps Offering Senzu Beans To Villains Who Don't Want To Do Better

Goku gets into a fighting stance, narrowing his eyes and holding out a half-closed fist.

Goku's the lead character, but there are a number of reasons people might not like him. To begin with, as Dragon Ball fans know, the show is basically "the Goku show" at all times. Somehow, winning battles always falls to him, and there's not anyone else for the others to challenge themselves with.

He's also got an awful habit of letting his opponents win in the hope that one day they can become a challenge when they spar again. Even worse, he's a big fan of tossing people's Senzu beans who should just be killed.

2 Goten Doesn't Want To Train & Mostly Spends His Time Invested Elsewhere

Goten gets ice cream for Valese on a date in Dragon Ball GT.

In the main Dragon Ball Z series, Goten is a fun character that's Kid Goku all over again. He looks identical to him, and he's being trained by his mom and brother. But in Dragon Ball GT, he's aged up and has become a teenager.

Despite this, the character hasn't stuck with his training at all. Like Gohan, he's found other pursuits that are more interesting to him. Instead of being a proud Saiyan warrior, he takes more after his human side. He barely mastered Super Saiyan.

1 Chi-Chi Stands In The Way Of Gohan Training To Protect Earth

Super Buu impatiently watches hour glass with Chi-Chi in Dragon Ball Z

The original version of Chi-Chi from Dragon Ball is a charming young woman who falls in love with Goku and wants to marry him. She even fights him after they're grown up, and after he defeats her he agrees to marry her at the end of the series. But when Dragon Ball Z picks up, the Chi Chi fans see here is a bit less tolerable.

Everyone understands she wants Gohan to have a good life and plenty of options but she loses perspective too easily. There are not going to be any colleges left standing if the planet blows up, and Gohan is necessary to keep that from happening.
