As Evans made clear in the tweet below, Lightyear is not an origin story for the toy character of Buzz Lightyear from the previous Toy Story films.  Rather, "This is the origin story of the human Buzz Lightyear that the toy is based on."

In the Toy Story films, Buzz Lightyear is a Space Ranger action figure who believes he actually is an intergalactic hero. He forged a deep friendship with Sherriff Woody over the course of the Toy Story film series, and was voiced by Tim Allen in all four movies as well as several shorts. Patrick Warburton voiced Lightyear in the Buzz Lightyear of Star Command animated series, which serves as inspiration for the Buzz Lightyear figure in the Toy Story universe.

Starring Chris Evans, Lightyear will debut in theaters on Jun. 17, 2022.
