Singer-songwriter Shawn Mendes will serve as an executive producer on Legendary's planned television adaptation of the Life Is Strange video games.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Mendes will oversee music on the Life Is Strange TV series alongside Andrew Gertler, his partner at Permanent Content. The project is being developed by Legendary Television and dj2 Entertainment, with Legendary having picked up the TV rights to Life Is Strange back in 2016. Anonymous Content, the company behind shows like True Detective and 13 Reasons Why, has also now joined the fray.

THR explains that Mendes and Gertler will executive produce Life Is Strange for Permanent, while Joy Gorman Wettels and Zack Hayden will executive produce for Anonymous. They join Dmitri M. Johnson, Howard Bliss and Dan Jevons, all of whom executive produce for dj2. Notably, dj2 has two other video game-based projects in the works, namely TV adaptation of My Friend Pedro and a Netflix anime adaptation of Tomb Raider.

It should come as no surprise that a recording artist like Mendes would be heavily involved in a project like Life Is Strange, as music is a major part of the source material. The first game in particular is rather well-known for its licensed soundtrack, which is chock-full of indie music.

Developed by Dontnod Entertainment and published by Square Enix, the original Life Is Strange video game launched in 2015. An episodic graphic adventure game with a story spanning five episodes, Life Is Strange follows Max Caulfield, a teenage girl with the ability to manipulate time itself.

Dontnod's Life Is Strange was followed up in 2017 by developer Deck Nine's Life Is Strange: Before the Storm, a three-episode prequel focusing on Max's best friend (and player-determinant love interest), Chloe Price. Dontnod returned in 2018 for Life Is Strange 2, a five-episode sequel focusing on a brand-new main protagonist, Sean Diaz, whose younger brother has the power of telekinesis. Life Is Strange 2 was preceded by The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit, a free prelude game also developed by Dontnod.

While Dontnod does not have any current plans to return to Life Is Strange, publisher Square Enix seems keen on keeping things moving with Deck Nine at the helm. The next game in the series, Life Is Strange: True Colors, is slated to release later this month on Sept. 10. Developed by Deck Nine, True Colors eschews the franchise's episodic format and focuses on main protagonist Alex Chen, who has the power of psychic empathy. Moreover, remastered versions of the original Life Is Strange and Before the Storm are slated for release early next year.
