Following the news of DC Comics’ announcement of The New 52 “Second Wave” and the cancellation of six of the initial launch, the publisher announced, via its blog The Source, an expanded role in the New 52 for Rob Liefeld, who had been pulling double duty as writer and artist on the cancelled “Hawk and Dove.” Beginning in May, Liefeld will take on new creative responsibilities for three of the initial New 52, including writing and illustrating “Deathstroke” and plotting “The Savage Hawkman” and “Grifter.”
In “Deathstroke,” Liefeld plans to pit Slade Wilson against fan-favorite intergalactic bounty hunter Lobo. “Deathstroke is tasked with the greatest challenge of his life, taking on the most dangerous prey in the galaxy…Lobo!” Liefeld told The Source. “The galactic criminal has escaped from his terrestrial prison where he has been housed for years. He is free and ready to settle the score! And what is the secret of the Omegas and what role will they play in the deadly showdown?”
The creator will also explore Nth metal and Carter Hall’s Thanagarian roots in his plot for “The Savage Hawkman.” “He wields the powerful Nth metal and, as Carter Hall is about to find out, it is a weapon coveted by the deadliest players in a game that plays across the ages,” Liefeld told The Source. “New enemies and allies emerge as Carter Hall travels across the globe in pursuit of the answers to his heritage and the Thanagarian connection.”
As for “Grifter,” Liefeld teased the possible return of Wildstorm character Deathblow in his statement to The Source. “Grifter has been targeted for extermination! The time is now for Grifter to embrace his destiny and lead the insurgence against the impending Daemonite threat,” said Liefeld. “He has spent his life running from his true destiny, but he must embrace his role in the coming conflict or worlds will fall. Familiar faces emerge warning Grifter that nothing can prepare him for what is coming. His true destiny is revealed and a reluctant hero emerges to lead a strike force of human allies that will deliver the ultimate deathblow to the impending invasion.”
Liefeld joins all three books with Issue #9 in May. While it can be assumed he will be taking over for the current creative team of “Deathstroke,” The Source said nothing about a rotation for the writers and artists of “Grifter” or “The Savage Hawkman.”
