For decades, LEGO has been known as a worldwide phenomenon and the go-to toy for brands to reach both children and adults. Now, it's been revealed which playsets have gained the most value over the decades, with surprising results.

A LEGO set from 1979 called Command Centre was ranked as the most valuable at $10,141. A distant second was 1978's Castle at $6,321, with the 1981 version coming in at number five valued at a little over $4,605. Ranked at number three, there was the Mr. Gold Minifigure from 2013 at $4,680. The Minifigure, of which only 5,000 were created, has the distinction of gaining the highest appreciation over time.

At fourth place, the 2016 educational set WeDo 2.0 ReadyGo Classroom Packs was valued at $4,614. Town Plan, a classic set from 1962, ranked at number six with a value of over $4,546. This was followed by a 1983 space-themed Minifigure pack in seventh place at a value of $4,237. A set based on the original Spider-Man film ranked at number eight, being valued at over $3,996. The ninth and tenth place holders were the 1990 set Airport Shuttle and 1987's Big Rig Truck Stop, respectively. The Airport set was value at over $3,988 with Truck Stop coming close at $3,700.

In recent years, LEGO has moved beyond playsets to create films and television series associated with brands such as Star Wars, as well as original content.
