LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga isn't just a love letter to Star Wars; it pays homage to all sorts of pop culture icons and franchises. One show that received a shout-out in the game is South Park. While the LEGO games usually target fourth graders like Cartman, references like these are definitely meant for the more adult crowd who are long-time South Park fans.

The Skywalker Saga is the long-awaited latest entry in the LEGO video game franchise created by TT games, and it's the developer's most innovative title yet. The scale of the game is substantial, as it covers all three Star Wars trilogies, giving players 24 planets to explore across the galaxy far, far away. With so much ground to cover, it's no wonder the game is filled with Easter eggs and references to products beyond the world of Star Wars.

Lego Star Wars Chewbacca Defense

When playing through the original trilogy of The Skywalker Saga, players will encounter a mission called "The Chewbacca Defense." This occurs while on Endor, during the Return of the Jedi portion of the trilogy. While the phrase means nothing to most Star Wars fans, it will make sense to South Park fans.

"The Chewbacca Defense" was first coined during Season 2, Episode 14, "Chef Aid," of South Park, which first aired way back in 1998. The episode involves a court case with Chef defending himself against the famous real life attorney, Johnnie Cochran, known for getting OJ Simpson acquitted of his murder charges.

South Park parodies this kangaroo court acquittal when Cochran implements The Chewbacca Defense, which is where he confuses the jury by explaining how Chewbacca wanting to live on Endor with a bunch of tiny Ewoks "does not make sense." The Chewbacca Defense succeeds and confuses the jury enough to get his client acquitted of all criminal charges.

South Park Chewbacca Defense

South Park’s influence has gone beyond the video game. The term "Chewbacca Defense" has since been popularized in the justice system to describe a legal strategy wherein an attorney will drum up something superfluous to confuse the jury rather than defend their client of the accusations being targeted against them. The strategy is meant to distract and mislead people following the case and is frowned upon in the practice of law.

There are even more pop culture influences found throughout The Skywalker Saga. Players can find the Ark of the Covenant during an Episode VII mission, which is a nod to Indiana Jones. There's also more mission names that reference other famous films, such as the mission "Dome Alone," which refers to the beloved Christmas movie franchise Home Alone.

The amount of detail and love put into The Skywalker Saga shows in every aspect of the game, including its Easter eggs. The long and arduous work the developers had to go through to get the game out for the fans is obvious. South Park and Star Wars are not the most compatible franchises around, so the wink and nod to one of South Park's more iconic Star Wars bits is delightful to see.
