LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga will allow gamers to play through the nine Star Wars films in any order and choose from roughly 300 playable characters.

Dawn McDiarmid, the lead hub designer for developer Traveller’s Tales, confirmed the character count in an interview with Official PlayStation Magazine. There are approximately 800 unique characters in the upcoming LEGO video game, according to McDiarmid.

Characters will become playable as they're unlocked through the course of the game's campaign, which retells the Skywalker saga from the nine Star Wars films. McDiarmid also confirmed that all nine films are unlocked from the beginning and can be played in any order.

McDiarmid additionally teased Babu Frik as a playable character. "I think fans of the new trilogy will be pleased to hear that Babu Frik is making an appearance as a playable character and he is possibly one of the cutest things I have ever seen," she said.

Babu Frik appeared in the final Skywalker saga film Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker as a droidsmith on the planet Kijimi. The crew asks Babu Frik to extract a translation from C-3PO, which will in turn erase C-3PO’s memory. Babu Frik’s cute appearance made him a breakout character upon the film’s release, despite having only a couple of minutes of screentime.

However, one character that is unconfirmed to appear in LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga is Darth Plagueis. The ancient Sith Lord, who is only spoken about in the Skywalker saga films, was the subject of a Change.org petition demanding that he be added to the upcoming LEGO video game. At the time of this writing, the petition has reached over 700 signatures; however, there is still no confirmation that Darth Plagueis will appear in the video game.

Additionally, McDiarmid spoke of the video game's new upgrade system, allowing players to aim down sights while shooting. An advanced quest system will also be included, "which features not only more elaborate and ridiculous quest chains ... but a whole new tracking system on your datapad with which to engage with the quests, and the ability to do multiple quests simultaneously."

Developed by TT Games and published by Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga arrives on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, Nintendo Switch and PC in spring 2021.
