In Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, Finn heavily implies that he has Force talent, but it is never said explicitly. Yet, confirmation that Finn is a Jedi comes from an unlikely source, LEGO Star Wars: Summer Vacation. More interesting than this revelation, however, is who Lucasfilm is telling it to.

Of course, any Star Wars fan worth their green milk knows that the LEGO Star Wars universe is not "canon." These are cartoons made primarily for children, and Summer Vacation is no different. The special itself is cute and charming, a series of animated shorts with the titular vacation used as a framing device. And it's this framing device that is the most important part of this special for fans of the larger Star Wars story, especially after The Rise of Skywalker. Because this is a cartoon for kids, Lucasfilm is making it very explicit that in the Star Wars sequels, Finn is every bit the Jedi that Rey is.

Like Ebenezer Scrooge on Christmas Eve, Finn is visited by three ghosts on this trip. Unlike Scrooge, he is not being tormented for his terrible behavior. Rather, he is being visited by Force ghosts who only show up to help a Jedi in need. They go on to tell Finn tales meant to teach him a lesson and lighten his mood, as the special tells its tale about the power of friendship. So, while the events of LEGO Star Wars: Summer Vacation are not canon, the fact that Finn is considered to be a "Jedi" is important to the character's story in the actual saga.

The adult Star Wars fandom seems impossible to please. For example, many lamented story-breaking moments in Ewan McGregor's Disney+ series. However, Obi-Wan Kenobi didn't break Star Wars canon, but rather added layers to what came before, from recontextualizing the fight in A New Hope to why Princess Leia hated the Empire. However, 15 years ago, Star Wars fans may not have "wanted" that series. Today, the kids the prequel films were made for are now adults. Their kids have grown up with the prequels as a part of Star Wars that's always been there. While some fans may think the sequels are controversial or even failed films, to kids they're just Star Wars.

With all the Star Wars content on Disney+ right now, it seems strange that the only other project set in the sequel era was Star Wars Resistance. The animated series is easily one of the most younger-skewing Star Wars series, aimed at very little kids. Otherwise, save for the comics and some novels, the sequel era is largely being ignored. Some might think Lucasfilm is distancing itself from the sequels because of the perceived negative reaction. Who knows... maybe it is. Yet, the studio also knows that kids love the Star Wars films of their youth. In 10 or so years, the sequel trilogy will be thought of very differently by the coveted 18-34 demographic. So, Lucasfilm may not be making new sequel era stories right now, but it will.

Lucasfilm wants to make sure that the kids who grow up liking new Star Wars are certain that Finn is a Jedi, too. The LEGO Star Wars: Summer Vacation Special is a fun 45-minute romp for kids and/or the family. There are performances from the film actors, like Billy Dee Williams, Anthony Daniels and Kelly Marie Tran. Finn being referred to as a "Jedi" may not seem like a big deal now. Yet, when the character returns either on the big screen or on Disney+, the kids who saw Summer Vacation won't be surprised when he ignites that lightsaber.
