The LEGO Movie co-writer and co-director Christopher Miller has revealed what inspired the film's passion for crossing so many different pop culture properties.

"In The LEGO Movie the IP crossover originated from me watching my son play with LEGO and put Batman and Chewbacca in a spaceship together," Miller said on Twitter.

The scenario Miller references in the tweet made it into the final cut of The LEGO Movie in the form of a scene where Chewbacca and the crew of the Millenium Falcon have a brief encounter with the protagonists of the film, which includes LEGO Batman.

Released in February 2014, The LEGO Movie was one of the best-reviewed of the year and turned into a smash-hit at the worldwide box office, where it grossed $468.1 million. It proved lucrative enough to spawn an entire franchise spanning multiple spinoffs and continuations, including The LEGO Batman Movie, The LEGO Ninjago Movie and The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part.

Directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, The LEGO Movie stars Chris Pratt, Will Ferrell, Elizabeth Banks, Will Arnett, Nick Offerman, Allison Brie, Charlie Day, Liam Neeson and Morgan Freeman. It is now available on physical and digital home media.
