It's rather disappointing that most superhero RPGs, such as DC Universe Online, have somewhat limited character creation menus and almost always take place on the mundane cities of Earth. This is a shame, especially considering the DC Universe is home to the most imaginative team of characters ever created—the Legion of Super-Heroes. First appearing alongside the Silver Age Superboy, the Legion is a massive organization of superheroes from the 31st century, an era where various planets are united in a relative intergalactic peace.

The Legion of Super-Heroes is dedicated to maintaining this peace through all of space and time, boasting a huge cast of characters with various origins, superpowers, races and personalities. Typically, the Legion of Super-Heroes has a rather tough audition process, often seeking unique, versatile and useful powers and abilities. But to the Legion, it doesn't matter how much a person's power is as much as how they can use it, and staple members such as Matter-Eater Lad and Bouncing Boy are proof that anyone can be a hero.

What makes the Legion of Super-Heroes so suited to an MMORPG, even more than DC Universe Online, is entirely due to the team's complete and utter lack of creative limits. While typically consisting of super-powered humanoid teenagers, there is no hard rule about who or what a Legionnaire could be, what their power is, or even what villains they face against, be it mundane, alien or magical.

Players would be able to create their own unique Legionnaire from various humanoid or alien races, creating a costume of their choice, with a superpower of their choice. Character creation in a Legion of Super-Heroes game should be treated less like a typical RPG and more like creating a creature in Spore, with perhaps the only limitation being the character must appear at least vaguely humanoid—even then, perhaps not.

Adding to the Legion's versatility is the standard-issue Flight Ring, which allows all wearers to fly and survive harsh environments, even through outer space. This means that there are almost no boundaries in crossing the game world's map, and all players can go to and from faraway locations quickly and efficiently—alongside the general thrill of flight.

The biggest hurdle in creating a Legion of Super-Heroes game would be balancing. The appeal of the Legion comes from almost every member having a unique and strange superpower of their own. Beyond general mainstream obscurity, it is perhaps this reason as to why the Legion has rarely ever made video game appearances, only showing up as cameos in Injustice 2 and Scribblenauts Unmasked.

The Lego games provide a possible solution, with certain objects and enemies being affected by a particular power type, but different superpowers can still achieve the same result. For example, in Lego Marvel Super Heroes, certain objects can only be moved by telekinetics like Jean Grey, but the Invisible Woman's force fields can also lift them. In a Legion game, players with either a Bouncing Boy-like body or the ability to create force fields can fulfill the purpose of deflecting projectiles all the same.

If game developers can overcome some of these hurdles, it's possible that the Legion of Super-Heroes may not only make for a well-executed MMORPG in its own right but also contribute to the team's popularity in mainstream media, rekindling interest in classic Silver Age adventures and escapism.
