This is a feature called "Win What's Never Been Won." This is about looking back at the history of comic book contests and showing who the winners were of the various contests (if we can tell who the winners are - I don't think anyone will ever know who won that Clark Bar Superhero Sweepstakes from the late 1970s).

Today, based on a suggestion from reader Dave B., we look a the cool contest for Legion of Super-Heroes #300, which involved readers having to figure out which artist drew which Legionnaire on the cover! It's a tricky contest!

Legion of Super-Heroes #300 was a clever issue that was based on the idea of altering Legion of Super-Heroes' previously established "this will happen in the future" timeline that previous writers had felt beholden, but Paul Levitz had decided to get around by showing that the future that they had seen was actually a POSSIBLE future.

The issue, then, had all sorts of different timelines and for each timeline, there was a different artist from the past of the Legion of Super-Heroes.

The book kicked off the with the then current art team of Keith Giffen and Larry Mahlstedt...

Then it went to a timeline drawn by Kurt Schaffenberger...

Then to one by Howard Bender and Frank Giacoia (with Bender trying to approximate the art style of the late, great, John Forte, who was the first regular artist on the Legion feature, but had died in the 1960s)...

Then Curt Swan and Dan Adkins (Swan was another regular artist in the early days of the Legion)...

Then Dave Cockrum...

Then James Sherman...

and finally, Joe Staton and Dick Giordano...

With Giffen and Manhlstedt, of course, finishing the issue off. Giffen and Mahlstedt even threw in a class group shot of the Legion at the end...

Okay, so here's the contest. Here is the cover to Legion #300...

You have to figure out which artists drew which Legionnaire. Here are the possible artists...

Tricky stuff, right? To nail each penciler/inker team is no easy task.

Here are the winners...

And read on for the answers...

Thanks for the suggestion, Dave!

Okay, folks, I am sure that you have suggestions for notable comic book contests! Heck, maybe you WON a notable comic book contest! That'd be awesome. I'd sure love to know who won that darn Clark Bar contest that no one can figure out (it might be the toughest mystery in comic book history)! Whatever the case may be, whether you just want to suggest a contest or if you won one, feel free to drop me a line at brianc@cbr.com and I'll see if I can't use your idea!
