When Legion premiered on FX last year, it was something of a surprise hit. The plot focuses on David Haller (played by Dan Stevens), a mental patient who soon discovers that he may not be crazy. As it turns out, he is a mutant, and so is his girlfriend (played by Rachel Keller) who he meets at the psychiatric hospital. Long story short (and without spoiling too many of the twists that happen during the first season), the two join forces with a specially trained team of mutants and the newfound alliance plunges David head first into a potentially world ending battle against a mysterious force known as The Shadow King.

Now, Legion has recently returned for a second season and fans could not be more excited. The actors are extremely excited as well. Not only because it is another year to dive into captivating characters with jaw dropping storylines, but because opposed to some of their previous work, these actors are given good roles. If we look into the past of much of the main cast individually, we would see that a lot of these actors have had some awful roles in even worse movies. To highlight how bad these old roles were, here are some examples.

15 DAN STEVENS - THE COBBLER

2014 was a big year for Dan Stevens. 2014 was the year he really came into his own as an actor thanks to his breakout performance in the critically acclaimed thriller, The Guest. He also played a supporting role in The Cobbler, which was a higher profile film thanks to the star power of Adam Sandler, but not so critically adored.

The film focused on Sandler as a cobbler who can become an entirely new person when he tries someone else's shoes. Stevens plays Emiliano, a playboy who Sandler turns into at one point. At 9%, The Cobbler remains the worst reviewed movie of Stevens's career so far. While the film was a critical and box office bomb, Stevens managed to impress audiences thanks to his winning charm.

14 AUBREY PLAZA - DIRTY GRANDPA

Aubrey Plaza tends to put in her best work on television. Her breakout role of April Ludgate on Parks and Recreation is what helped make her the star that she is today, and her role as The Shadow King during the first season of Legion proved to be one of the very best performances of last year's entire television season. Her movie resume, however, can be hit or miss.

While she does have some excellent movies under her belt -- such as Safety Not Guaranteed, Damsels in Distress, and Scott Pilgrim vs The World -- she also has quite a few stinkers attached to her names. Dirty Grandpa is one of those stinkers, and it's not just because the Grandpa stinks. The film holds an 11% on Rotten Tomatoes.

13 RACHEL KELLER - HOLLIDAYSBURG

Long before she took on the role of David Haller's love interest, Syd Barrett, Rachel Keller's first feature role was in playing Tori in Hollidaysburg. Hollidaysburg is a dramedy about five friends who reconnect after high school. Keller shines as the star of the cast, but the rest of the cast struggles to put in the same level of strong performances.

As a whole, the film overall is dull and the jokes miss more than they hit. The movie was in competition for the top prize on Starz's The Chair against Shane Dawson's Not Cool, and lost. For a movie to lose as if it was considered worse than a movie that starred and was directed by Shane Dawson, it has to be downright terrible. Hollidaysburg is that kind of terrible.

12 JEAN SMART - $#*! MY DAD SAYS

Jean Smart plays Melanie Bird on Legion. With a tremendous career in film, television, and the theater that spans nearly 40 years, Jean Smart is a bonafide legend in this business. Regardless of if she is provided with a good script or a bad script, Smart somehow always finds a way to put in 110% into the work and give a memorable performance.

With that said, judging by a lot of her work, she has received quite a few bad scripts in her day. She especially received a handful of bad scripts when she had a recurring role on the show $#*! My Dad Says, which starred William Shatner. There is a reason why the show only lasted one year on the air. The show holds an embarrassing Tomatometer score of 0% on Rotten Tomatoes.

11 KATE ASELTON - THE FREEBIE

Prior to playing David's sister, Amy, on Legion, Kate Aselton was best remembered for playing Jenny on seven seasons of The League. Somewhere in between all of that, she found time to direct and star in her own movie, called The Freebie. In the comedy-drama, Aselton and Dax Shepard play a married couple who after losing the spark that charged their marriage decide to rekindle their love by allowing each other to have a one night stand with someone else.

While the majority of critics praised the film for having an interesting plot, the common criticism was the film never did anything truly compelling or funny with the premise. Critics gave the film a 57% on Rotten Tomatoes, and audiences were less kind giving it a 31%.

10 JEREMIE HARRIS/HAMISH LINKLATER - THE ANGRIEST MAN IN BROOKLYN

Here, we have got ourselves two bad roles for the price of one. In addition to being one of Robin Williams' final films -- released one month before his death -- this film also serves as an early role for Jeremie Harris, who plays Leon in the movie. His future Legion co-star, Hamish Linklater, has a slightly bigger supporting role in the film in playing the son of Robin Williams.

The Angriest Man in Brooklyn focuses on Williams playing an angry man who gets even angrier when told by his doctor that he is going to die in the next 90 minutes due to a brain aneurysm. The film was critically panned, receiving a 9% on Rotten Tomatoes with most criticisms directed towards the film's overly sentimental attempt at humor.

9 BILL IRWIN - SCENES FROM A MALL

While it was not until his recent success on Legion that Bill Irwin started being recognized for his name, Irwin has been more recognized by his face alone in prior years. Something of a "That Guy" actor, fans tend to instantly recognize him on the street as the therapist from Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, or as Mr. Noodle from Elmo's World.

With a long and storied acting career to his name, he has also afforded himself some small appearances in film. One of which came in the film Scenes From a Mall, about a failing couple -- played by Woody Allen and Bette Midler -- admitting their infidelities to each other as they venture a mall. Drawing on his experiences as a clown, Irwin plays a mime.

8 JEMAINE CLEMENT - DINNER FOR SCHMUCKS

A year before Dinner For Schmucks came out in theaters, Jemaine Clement's breakout hit show Flight of the Conchords had been cancelled by HBO. Clement tried to recover from the loss on television by making the transition to Hollywood movies. Dinner for Schmucks was his first step into making that transition. Needless to say, it did not work out for Clement.

That is not necessarily Clement's fault. Clement's performance is just as humorously ridiculous and outrageous as her earlier work and he impressed critics, but the film itself failed to draw positive reviews. Critics found the film as a whole to be far too tasteless and mean spirited in tone to enjoy thoroughly. As a result, the film holds a measly 42% on Rotten Tomatoes.

7 HAMISH LINKLATER - FANTASTIC FOUR

Back when he was still on the rise in Hollywood as a young actor, Hamish Linklater scrapped from the bottom of the barrel to get any roles he was able to get his hands attached to. Which is why he snagged a role as Leonard, the right hand man of Victor Von Doom in the 2005 version of the Fantastic Four.

Like just about every big screen adaptation of the Fantastic Four so far, this one was pretty awful, getting a certified rotten score of 27% on Rotten Tomatoes' Tomatometer. For his first Hollywood film appearance, this proved to be a kind of terrible introduction for Hamish Linklater into the mainstream entertainment market, but hey, we all have got to start out somewhere. Especially in the Hollywood industry.

6 JEAN SMART - THE ODD COUPLE II

Jean Smart has always been a well respected actress in her craft. She has led a career of terrific performances and several Emmy nominations, including three wins. Most notably from her guest role on Frasier, which turned out to be a breakout role for Smart. Long before any of the fame and acclaim came along, she had a small role as Holly in The Odd Couple II.

The original 1968 comedy was an Oscar nominated film, and the fourth highest grossing film of 1968. To this day, it is still well regarded as a classic. The 1998 sequel beat three decade old dead horse into the ground, and failed to capitalized on long dated humor from the '60s. With good reason, The Odd Couple II holds a 24% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Navid Negahban has joined the second season of Legion as Amahl Farouk, better known as the latest manifestation of The Shadow King. Before he landed the part on Legion, Negahban got around Hollywood by taking up small roles in big projects like Homeland, American Sniper, Arrow, and Atlas Shrugged Part 1.

Thanks to the well celebrated work by Ayn Rand, there was a fairly huge amount of hype going into the big screen adaptation, which promised to be part of a three part trilogy. As it turns out, the Atlas Shrugged trilogy as a whole is perhaps the worst reviewed trilogy in movie history. The first film holds a 10% on Rotten Tomatoes, the second film has a 4%, and the finale of the trilogy as a devastating 0%.

4 HAMISH LINKLATER - BATTLESHIP

Hamish Linklater really needs to pick better movies to star in. Linklater consistently nails it out of the park with his television credits -- including The Good Wife, The Newsroom, The Crazy Ones, Fargo, and of course Legion -- but his film choices are clearly something left to be desired. One of the worst films to his resume is Battleship, where he plays a scientist named Cal Zapata.

Yes, the movie is just as stupid as his character's name. Battleship is just another average run of the mill mindless shoot 'em up alien invasion flick, only not nearly as entertaining or satisfying as similar classics in the sub-genre. For these reasons, critics trashed Battleship and it holds a lousy rating of Rotten Tomatoes at a 34% rating.

3 AUBREY PLAZA - GRUMPY CAT'S WORST CHRISTMAS EVER

During the dark ages of the internet -- let's say late 2012 -- there was a little meme making the rounds of social media of the meanest looking cat on the planet. Appropriately enough, the cat was called Grumpy Cat and for the time, joking about how grumpy the cat was made for some funny times.

Like every meme on the internet, Grumpy Cat had a short shelf life and after about a month or so, people stopped caring and moved on to the next meme. The Lifetime Movie Network apparently did not get the message and decided to release Grumpy Cat's Worst Christmas Ever over two years after Grumpy Cat stopped being relevant. And because Aubrey Plaza has the grumpiest voice in Hollywood, she had to voice Grumpy Cat.

2 JEMAINE CLEMENT - GENTLEMEN BRONCOS

A few months after his show Flight of the Conchords got cancelled, Jemaine Clement tried to bounce back from it by starring in the Jared Hess directed comedy, Gentlemen Broncos. Clement stars as a novelist who shamelessly rips off a story written by a teenage loner, and goes on to make a movie on the novel.

Think of it as basically Big Fat Liar, but on a very small independent film budget. Expectations were already high on the film following what was then the fairly recent cancellation of Flight of the Conchords, but Clement and the film itself failed to deliver on any true laughs. Gentlemen Broncos holds a 19% on Rotten Tomatoes and remains to be Clement's lowest rated -- and most rotten -- movie on his filmography.

1 DAN STEVENS - THE FIFTH ESTATE

While 2014 was a breakout year for Dan Stevens, 2013 was a year he continued to be on the rise as he transitioned to film following the success he found on Downton Abbey. One of the only films he landed in 2013 was The Fifth Estate, a Wikileaks biography where Stevens played journalist Ian Katz.

The cast put in some impressive work -- Benedict Cumberbatch makes for a rather excellent Julian Assange, and Stevens is no slouch himself when it comes down to his role -- but the directorial work and writing is something to be desired. The presentation of the film overall as a whole is pretty humdrum and boring. The film holds a 37% on Rotten Tomatoes, and is not well favored with audiences or critics.
