On FX's Marvel-based Legion, Amber Midthunder plays Kerry Loudermilk, one half of the body-sharing Kerry/Cary mutant who's counterpart is a middle-aged white man, played by Bill Irwin. The two share a body and sensory experiences, though Kerry can exit Cary when she chooses. In contrast to Cary's more passive nature, Kerry's aggression and physical prowess were her hallmarks in Season 1, along with the deep and sometimes undefinable connection between her and Cary.

Those two qualities intersected explosively last season when Cary was forced to leave Kerry behind while the two attempted to rid David Haller of the parasitic Shadow King. Cary's hand was forced, but that didn't mitigate the feelings of abandonment that Kerry felt -- feelings that targeted her intense aggression at him for what was presumably the first time. While Season 1 saw them resolve this conflict to some degree, when CBR asked Midthunder at Monday night's Legion Season 2 premiere in Los Angeles what fans could expect from her character this time around, she indicated that the issues the two shared were far from put to rest -- and that the show would reveal a side of Kerry we didn't get to see much of in Season 1.

I think... the number one way that she evolves this year is in terms of vulnerability. Because you pick up, it’s a year later. The Cary’s kind of have all of this unaddressed turmoil in their relationship for lack of a better word because the last thing that happened was that he abandoned her and that’s never happened to them and she’s never had to deal with feelings like that. So all of a sudden you have A) this quarrel between the two of them and B) this... question of, can they mend it? So that I think just brings up a lot of things between the two of them.... I feel like this year is centered around her vulnerability.

The relationship between the Loudermilks became a bit of a narrative dark horse in Legion's first season. The pair's genuine affection for one another sometimes presents itself as co-dependence, but because it's contextualized as something neither party can really help, Amber Midthunder and Bill Irwin cultivated chemistry that was both unique and endearing. Yet another reason to saddle up for a second season of one of the most dense and rewarding watches on television.

Premiering at 10 tonight on FX, Legion‘s 10-episode Season 2 stars Dan Stevens as David Haller, Rachel Keller as Syd Barrett, Amber Midthunder as Kerry Loudermilk, Aubrey Plaza as Lenny Busker, Bill Irwin as Cary Loudermilk, Jeremie Harris as Ptonomy Wallace, Jean Smart as Dr. Melanie Bird, Jemaine Clement as Oliver Bird and Navid Neghaban as Amal Farouk.
