Neither the title of the episode, “Guest Starring John Noble,” nor the somewhat-vague description quite prepared viewers for what they’re in store for next week with DC’s Legends of Tomorrow. Thankfully, however, the new promo spells it all out: The Waverider crew must prevent Gorilla Grodd from (presumably) killing a young Barack Obama.
An Obama episode was teased in January, with Legends staff writers Keto Shimizu and James Eagan setting the story in the 1980s, when the future president was a student at Occidental College. Of course, the Grodd angle was conveniently left out of those early details. So, we’re left to wonder why the classic DC villain is targeting Obama while we enjoy Sara declaring “We’re on Obamacare,” and the promo using the phrase “Make America Grodd Again.”
This will mark the third former president to be showcased on the series. Early in Season 3, Legends introduced Lyndon B. Johnson, played by Peter Hall. A Season 2 episode featured George Washington, portrayed by Randall Batinkoff.
With the timeline barely stable, the Legends must tackle two anachronisms at the same time to try and keep Mallus at bay. Sara (Caity Lotz) and Rip (guest star Arthur Darvill) team up to stop Grodd (guest star David Sobolov) from going after a particular target leaving Nate (Nick Zano) and Wally (Keiynan Lonsdale) to stop Amaya (Maisie Richardson-Sellers) from changing her future. Meanwhile, the Legends think they have found a way to destroy Mallus, but they will have to create an uneasy alliance with one of their enemies.
Airing Mondays at 8 p.m. ET/PT on The CW, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow stars Arthur Darvill as Rip Hunter, Dominic Purcell as Mick Rory/Heat Wave, Caity Lotz as Sara Lance/White Canary, Brandon Routh as Ray Palmer/Atom, Maisie Richardson-Sellers as Amaya Jiwe/Vixen, Nick Zano as Nate Heywood/Steel and Keiynan Lonsdale as Wally West/Kid Flash.
