The CW's "Legends of Tomorrow" boasts a robust lineup of DC Comics characters -- and thanks to the time-spanning nature of the series, there are a lot of characters that have the potential to appear. One new hero that's set to feature prominently in Season 2, as the Justice Society makes its debut, is the dark energy manipulator Obsidian. Lance Henriksen was previously set to play the character, but a new report reveals a twist to the casting.

According to TVLine, "Among the JSA members that have been cast for Season 2, it turns out there are two Obsidians. When the team first meets the hero, he is played by Dan Payne (Strange Empire). The previously announced Lance Henriksen then plays a future version of the character."

The approach to Obsidian is similar to the handling of Vixen in "Legends of Tomorrow" Season 2. Actress Megalyn Echikunwoke starred as Mari McCabe in the fourth season of "Arrow," along with voicing her in the "Vixen" animated series on the CW Seed. However, Maisie Richardson-Sellers will portray Amaya Jiwe -- the grandmother of McCabe -- in Season 2.

Obsidian has toed the line between hero and villain in the comics. His dark energy powers originate from a dimension called the Shadowlands. He also has familial ties to other members of the JSA, considering his parents are Thorn and Alan Scott, AKA the Golden Age Green Lantern.

"Legends of Tomorrow" Season 2 premieres Thursday, October 13 at 8 pm EST on The CW.
