DC's Legends of Tomorrow introduced a more stable method of time travel to the Arrowverse with the Waverider, a futuristic spaceship that aided Rip Hunter during his residency as a Time Master before exiting the organization in order to form the Legends of Tomorrow. The ship's unique look helped create the aesthetic of the show, which is constantly changing and taking risks. However, the ship, much like the series, is a completely original idea created for the Arrowverse and does not have a comic book origin. But, while the Waverider ship does not exist in the comics, it does share a name with a classic DC character who has a history with former captain, Rip Hunter.

During a behind the scenes feature of Legends of Tomorrow, executive producer Marc Guggenheim and co-showrunner Phil Klemmer discussed the origin of the time ship. Guggenheim saw this as a perfect opportunity to include an Easter egg when naming the vessel. While he struggled to find a name, he contacted comic legend Geoff Johns who suggested calling it "Waverider," after the 1991 character of the same name. Guggenheim saw this as the perfect reference, given the character's abilities and connection to Rip Hunter.

Waverider aka Matthew Ryder was a scientist from the year 2030 that traveled to the past in order to stop the villainous Monarch. After traveling back to 1991, Ryder was infused with the time stream, blessing him with new abilities, including time travel, access and manipulation of the time stream, accurately predicting a person's future as well as super speed, flight, energy projection, invisibility and intangibility. Waverider joined a group called the Linear Men, which included members like Travis O'Connell, Liri Lee and Rip Hunter, the eventual founder of the Legends of Tomorrow who was portrayed by former Doctor Who companion Arthur Darvill.

The Linear Men were a group of men and women who swore to protect the timeline, taking refuge in the Vanishing Point, another staple of the series that housed the Time Masters, Rip's former employers. Legends of Tomorrow is heavily based on this group, as they follow a similar goal with slight differences. While the Legends are a group of misfits and outlaws traveling on a ship and solving problems (most of which they created), the Linear Men comprise of temporally powered beings who resolve paradoxes and keep a watchful eye on the timeline. The Linear Men were also unstable and never agreed on anything, causing Rip to lock the members in a cage inside the Vanishing Point.

With the recent news that Amy Louise Pemberton, the voice of the Waverider's AI Gideon, will be brought on in her corporeal form for the seventh season, it could be interesting if she became a version of the 1991 character, proving a more hands-on assistance in the field and thus, bringing everything full circle.

DC's Legends of Tomorrow Season 6 is currently airing Sundays at 8 p.m. ET/PT on The CW. The series will return for Season 7 on Wednesday, Oct. 13.
