Legends of Tomorrow Moves Closer to Firestorm Breakup

SPOILER WARNING: This article contains major spoilers for "Phone Home," the latest episode of DC's Legends of Tomorrow.

Martin Stein's upcoming departure from DC's Legends of Tomorrow has drawn a little closer. In "Phone Home," the latest episode, Stein celebrated the birth of his grandson Ronnie, which convinced Jax that Stein needed to return home to his own time for his family.

In the beginning of the episode, Jax realized something was up with Stein when he skipped a team meeting. Mick overheard them speaking and confirmed to Jax that Stein was hiding something -- but he didn't know what. Jax and Mick subsequently conducted their own investigation, only to discover that the jump ship's log had been erased.

When Jax and Mick confronted Stein about the jump ship logs, Stein admitted he was the one who had taken it. However, he wasn't reporting to the Time Bureau like they suspecting; instead, he had built a communicator that could transmit between time periods and had given one to his daughter Lily, so that he knew when she was having her baby. In fact, she was in labor at that very moment, so Stein had been on his way to see his daughter -- that is, until Mick broke the jump ship as a threat.

As a result, Stein wasn't able to use the jump ship to go back to 2017, so he, Jax and Mick used the Waverider instead. Though this ended up causing some trouble for the rest of the team, the three Legends made it just in time for Ronnie -- who appears to be named after Stein's first Firestorm partner Ronnie Raymond -- to be born.

Upon seeing Stein with his grandson, Jax realized that Stein needed to be with his family. At the end of the episode, he approached Ray Palmer for help. "Actually, I want to ask you something. It's just seeing Stein with his grandkid earlier... I mean, we're his family, but this isn't his home. Not anymore," Jax explained.

"Yeah, but you two are inseparable. Like, literally," Palmer added.

"That's what I need your help with. I want to break up Firestorm," Jax said.

Victor Garber, who plays Stein, will depart the series by the end of Season 3, and it's unlikely that he will return at any point beyond his final episodes. However, because of the way they are linked, Jax cannot exist without Stein or they will both destabilize and be destroyed. In talking to Ray, Jax set up for Stein's departure, though it's unclear if Ray will find a "cure" for Firestorm or if they will find new partners.

Airing Tuesdays at 9 pm EST/PT on The CW, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow stars Victor Garber as Martin Stein, Arthur Darvill as Rip Hunter, Dominic Purcell as Mick Rory/Heat Wave, Caity Lotz as Sara Lance/White Canary, Franz Drameh as Jefferson “Jax” Jackson/Firestorm, Brandon Routh as Ray Palmer/Atom, Maisie Richardson-Sellers as Amaya Jiwe/Vixen, and Nick Zano as Nate Heywood/Steel.
