DC's Legends of Tomorrow former cast member Brandon Routh is hopeful that fans will one day be rewarded with a proper finale for the time-traveling superhero show.

In an interview with Syfy Wire about his recent appearance on Quantum Leap, Routh opened up about his time playing Ray Palmer/Atom on Legends of Tomorrow and how he feels about the series being canceled. "We were done in 2019, so we've been coming to terms with that for some time," Routh said. "But you know, I just love all the Legends fans, and they deserve some kind of a wrap up, so I hope that they get it." While a Legends revival seems unlikely at this time, Routh admitted that he is happy to be back on another time travel series like Quantum Leap. "I just love this type of world of time travel where anything's possible. And I'm so excited to be a part of another show like that."

Set in the Arrowverse, Legends of Tomorrow premiered in January 2016 on The CW as a joint spinoff of Arrow and The Flash. The series initially revolved around Time Master Rip Hunter assembling a team of superheroes and villains to stop the immortal tyrant Vandal Savage from conquering Earth. In addition to Routh's Atom, the first Legends team included Caity Lotz's White Canary, Victor Garber and Franz Drameh as Firestorm, Ciara Renée's Hawkgirl, Falk Hentschel's Hawkman, Wentworth Miller's Captain Cold and Dominic Purcell as Heat Wave, with later seasons adding well-known DC superheroes Citizen Steel (Nick Zano), Vixen (Maisie Richardson-Sellers), John Constantine (Matt Ryan) and Kid Flash (Keiynan Lonsdale) to its cast. Despite a strong fan following, Legends of Tomorrow was canceled in 2022 after seven seasons and 110 episodes.

Early Plans for The Flash Season 9 Included the Legends

Legends' cancellation meant that the series ended on a cliffhanger involving the titular team and Booster Gold being arrested by the latter's superiors. While this was an unfortunate ending for the beloved superhero series, The Flash showrunner Eric Wallace initially hoped to use his show's upcoming ninth season as a way to properly conclude Legends of Tomorrow. He stated that he had hoped to "have at least one [episode] -- if not a two-parter -- that wrapped up Legends of Tomorrow. And you know, there [would] be a little crossover. We get them back, we get them out of time jail, all these good things, Booster Gold, etc, etc." However, when Wallace found out the episode count for The Flash's final season was 13 instead of 20, he realized that spending one or two whole episodes tying up Legends of Tomorrow "was no longer possible."

After over a decade on The CW, the Arrowverse is set to conclude in 2023 when The Flash finishes airing its final season. Before Grant Gustin's Scarlet Speedster embarks on his last run, a plethora of Arrowverse alumni are set to make appearances in Season 9, including Stephen Amell's Oliver Queen/Green Arrow. Also returning are David Ramsey as John Diggle/Spartan and Nicole Maines as Supergirl's Nia Nal/Dreamer.

New episodes of The Flash Season 9 air Wednesdays on The CW.
