Nostalgic Nickelodeon classic Legends of the Hidden Temple is getting rebooted as an adult-focused competition series, which is set to launch on The CW.

The series will preserve many of the original elements that lead to the original's popularity — though the show will feature adult contestants instead of child competitors like the original Nickelodeon series. It will bring back Olmec, the large Mayan talking head that became a staple of the show, along with several of the original show's mini-games, including "Moat Crossings," "The Steps of Knowledge" and "Temple Run." The show will also retain the original team names: "Purple Parrots," "Blue Barracudas," "Orange Iguanas," "Red Jaguars," "Silver Snakes" and "Green Monkeys."

In addition to the game show transitioning from young contestants to adult ones, it will also be scaled up. It will take place in a jungle (real or constructed remains to be seen) instead of a small set, introduce more difficult challenges and enhance the rewards. The game will pit five teams against each other as they battle it out to reach Olmec's temple, avoid the guards, retrieve the treasure and return it to its owner, in following the game's sequence of events.

Legends of the Hidden Temple originally aired on Nickelodeon between 1993 and 1995, with repeat episodes airing for nearly 30 years following the show's original series finale. It was originally inspired by video game series The Legend of Zelda and Indiana Jones films. Legends of the Hidden Temple has gone on to inspire a board game, mobile games, Halloween costumes and a television movie, which aired back in 2016.

A reboot of the series was originally going to stream on Quibi. However, the streaming platform ultimately shut down six months after its launch. It is unclear if this is the same reboot that was planned for the streamer. Roku currently owns the rights to Quibi's library.

Legends of the Hidden Temple is based upon the original show of the same name by David G. Stanley, Scott A. Stone and Stephen R. Brown. The new series is produced by Stone & Company Entertainment and Nickelodeon, with executive producers Scott A. Stone and Marcus Fox. There is not yet a release date for the series.
