Legendary Entertainment is developing Tencent Comics' webcomic I'm a Killer Maid into a television series, a rare example of a Chinese IP being adapted for an international audience.

According to Variety, Tencent Pictures will produce the series, with CEO and Tencent Group vice president Edward Cheng Wu serving as executive producer. Tencent's Wenxin She and former Legendary executive Vasco Xu will also be producers.

Described as "Mary Poppins turned John Wick," with a hint of Freaky Friday and Killing Eve, the series follows retired assassin Bacai as she tries to live a normal life as a housemaid for a reclusive comic book writer. However, things go sideways when she accidentally switches bodies with her employer.

Legendary said the series will explore "gender identity and expression, male/female dynamics and genre deconstruction." The company hopes to cast an Asian lead alongside a group of diverse supporting characters. Unlike the 2017 straight-to-streaming Chinese film adaptation of the comic from Tencent and iQiyi, Legendary plans on handling the comic's LGBTQ themes more seriously.

This is not Tencent Pictures' first Hollywood production. The company was involved in the development of Venom and A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood.
