The following contains spoilers for The Legend of Vox Machina Season 2, Episode 12, "The Hope Devourer," now streaming on Prime Video.

In The Legend of Vox Machina Season 2, the Chroma Conclave dragons kickstarted a series of harrowing dominoes for the heroes. They had to embark on a deadly mission to find the vestiges, which are powerful weapons that could kill the beasts. This mission pushed the heroes to their mental and physical limits. In the process, Vax became the Raven's champion to provide extra muscle, but at a cost: he gave his soul up to become a soul reaper for the Matron of Death.

In addition to Vax becoming a super-soldier, the journey tested Grog, which resulted in him reclaiming his clan, as well as getting the Titanstone knuckles. He finally understood the message of family, and that brain power often counted ahead of brawn on these adventures. It perfectly set the fellowship up for the finale against Umbrasyl, which was one of the biggest spectacles the animated series ever had. While a major triumph was garnered, Season 2 has teased a bittersweet tomorrow.

The Legend of Vox Machina Levels Up the Crew's Symbol

The fight against Umbrasyl almost takes the heroes out, as the "Hope Devourer" -- with all its acid-spitting -- isn't an easy foe to overcome. However, Scanlan is eager to save the world for his daughter Kaylie and digs deep -- he takes Mythcarver and kills the beast. It's a testament to how much he's grown, accepting the sword as his, and that they need to be more selfless in the fight to come. The fact he finally cares for others says a lot, reinforcing he can be a good father someday.

The timing is right as everyone embraces the presence of each other -- something they took for granted all this time. Grog is happy his friends are safe, and Percy and Vex seem to be embracing their feelings. Similarly, Pike eyes Scanlan in a more romantic light. Even Keyleth can't help but fawn over Vax, realizing wins like this rarely come around. To top it off, they have Umbrasyl's treasure to take for themselves, and to help the rest of Exandria rebuild. Thus, they're no longer sellswords, but paragons of virtue and sentinels of justice. They are indeed making social change, giving them the fame they always wanted, but with a more genuine air.

Unfortunately, circumstances are not within Vox's control, and this unity isn't bound to last. When the heroes realize the dragons are mortal, they get back to Whitestone to plan a new strategy. However, one of the other dragons, Raishan, takes over Yennen's body and makes it clear she wants to backstab Thordak. The "Diseased Deceiver" warns the council that they need her help, and Season 2 ends with Thordak and Vorugal overseeing new eggs being hatched.

The infighting between these dragons could result in mass casualties and collateral damage spilling all over the realm. If they learn they have a traitor in the ranks, they could become even more unhinged. It's also uncertain if Vox Machina can trust Raishan and will have to weigh how desperate they are since they do have hope and key weapons now. One thing that has to be monitored as well is if the dragons have more spies in the camp. Thordak could have shady plants disguised in the council to sabotage and inform; it's, therefore, going to be a guessing game moving forward. Ultimately, Season 2 concludes with more questions than answers. Finding out there's discord with the dragons still shapes a very tenuous future for Exandria.

Created by Critical Role, both seasons of The Legend of Vox Machina are available to stream on Prime Video.
