Universal and Illumination are reportedly closing a deal to make a The Legend of Zelda movie.

Following the massive success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Universal and Illumination are actively working with Nintendo to get a Legend of Zelda movie off the ground. The news was first reported on the latest episode of The Hot Mic with Jeff Sneider and John Rocha. It would reportedly be Illumination’s next big film.

This isn't the first time a Legend of Zelda adaptation has been rumored. Shortly after The Super Mario Bros. Movie opened in theaters, there were rumblings that Universal and Illumination were interested in bringing other Nintendo franchises to the big screen. Furthermore, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom producer Eiji Aonuma and director Hidemaro Fujibayashi recently admitted that they were "interested for sure" in seeing Link and Zelda receive an animated feature. "But it’s not just me being interested in something that makes things happen, unfortunately!" remarked Aonuma at the time. Fujibayashi added that "the voices of the fans are what's important here" and that, if they make enough noise, they could convince Nintendo to move forward with a Legend of Zelda movie. Well, if The Hot Mic's report ends up being true, it looks like the fans have won.

What Is Legend of Zelda?

The Legend of Zelda is arguably Nintendo's most recognizable and successful franchise after Super Mario. The first video game in the series, The Legend of Zelda, was created by Japanese game designers Shigeru Miyamoto and Takashi Tezuka and was released in February 1986. The series primarily centers around Link, a courageous young man of the elf-like Hylian race, and Princess Zelda, a magical princess who is the mortal reincarnation of the goddess Hylia, as they fight to save the magical land of Hyrule from the evil warlord/demon king Ganon. The latest video game in the series, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, was released on May 12, 2023, for the Nintendo Switch.
