Prime Video’s The Legend of Vox Machina adapted a fan-favorite moment from the Critical Role live stream which saw one of Campaign 1's most romantic moments.
Critical Role’s "Heredity and Hats" was the first episode of the actual-play Dungeons & Dragons show performed in front of a live audience and featured uproarious applause when Taliesin Jaffe’s Percy De Rolo titled Laura’s Bailey’s ranger Lady Vex'ahlia Baroness of the Third House of Whitestone and Mistress of the Grey Hunt. This turning point in the romance between Percy and Vex was one that fans were clamoring to see brought to life in The Legend of Vox Machina.
Legend of Vox Machina Makes Changes From Critical Role
The Legend of Vox Machina has hinted at Vex's anxiety surrounding her father throughout the second season. This tension came to a head in the Fey Realm, where her father’s elven kingdom of Syngorn has hidden from the threat of the Chroma Conclave. The twins Vex and Vax are reunited with their father Syldor Vessar, voiced by Troy Baker, alongside Percy and Keyleth in Syngorn. In Critical Role, Percy’s attempt to undermine Syldor by titling Vex goes smoothly. However, The Legend of Vox Machina presents a new hitch.
In The Legend of Vox Machina, Slydor does not accept Percy’s amended title for his daughter and belittles the gunslinger for his "transparent ploy." This change from the actual-play format grants Vex a moment to stand up to her father for herself and come to Percy’s defense. This scene is one of many tweaked or entirely changed scenes from Critical Role’s Chroma Conclave arc in the animated adaptation.
Percy and Vex are a beloved romantic pairing among Critical Role fans and The Legend of Vox Machina has peppered in moments of romantic tension between the two throughout the season. Their budding romance made complicated by Percy’s role in Vex’s death in the Raven Queen’s tomb and Vax’s resulting distrust of the gunslinger. Their bonding in the Fey Realm, including Vex’s titling, marks a solidifying of their romantic bond both in Critical Role and the Legend of Vox Machina.
As The Legend of Vox Machina continues the Chroma Conclave arc, there are many iconic moments from the original actual-play show that fans are hoping to see brought to life. These fan wishlists extend beyond Vox Machina as Critical Role’s second campaign, the Mighty Nein, will also receive the animated adaptation treatment at Prime Video.
