The animated action series Avatar: the Last Airbender starred avatar Aang as the hero, and he needed a team to fight the Fire Nation and bring peace to the world. Some 70 years later, avatar Korra also has her own team, and that includes the brothers Mako and Bolin. They've both seen their fair share of fights.
Mako is a firebender, and he has seen action against nearly every sort of opponent, from pro benders in the ring to Kuvira's metal army and the Equalists, not to mention rogue spirits. The action scenes in The Legend of Korra are just as creative and well-choreographed as those in the previous series, and here are the best fights Mako took part in.
10 Mako & Korra Vs Equalists On Motorcycles
This was a brief scuffle, but it neatly demonstrated the power of the Equalists. Mako and Korra were chasing the Equalistes down the street at high speed until they ended up in a street brawl, and the Equalists were tough opponents for sure.
Mako and Korra used all the firebending at their disposal, but their slippery opponents fought them on equal terms and used bolas to tie them up. Fortunately, Naga came along and scared off the Equalists before anything really bad could happen.
9 Mako & Asami Vs Triple-Threat Triads
In season 2, trouble was brewing all over the place, and Asami's wholesale products kept getting stolen. So, Mako arranged a sting operation: hire the Triple-Threat Triads to escort them on a boat and wait for the thieves to arrive.
But the Triads turned on Mako and Asami, and a fierce water battle ensued that involved a speedboat chase across the Republic City harbor. Mako and Asami got away, but that didn't mean victory. Varrick had gotten the better of them.
8 Mako & Team Vs The Redsands Rabaroos
This is what it looks like when the Fire Ferrets pro-bending team is in top shape. Thanks to Mako's leadership and Korra's power, the team makes it into the pro-bending finals, and they face the Rabaroos team first.
Mako, Korra, and Asami are fighting seamlessly, and their nonstop offense pushes the Rabaroos to the ropes, then crushed them. It's all thanks to Mako's sharp leadership and battle plans, and of course, his impeccable firebending.
7 Mako & Team Vs The Wolfbats
This was the final pro-bending match of the tournament, and the stakes were never higher for the Fire Ferrets. The Fire Ferrets had barely limped their way here, and they were sure that defeat was near. But still, they gave it their all.
The Wolfbats were cheating the entire time, but the Fire Ferrets hung on and played fair, showing some serious grit and integrity. That included Mako, who even landed a surprise firebending blow and annoyed the enemy team leader. He followed that up with a taunting wink.
6 Mako & Korra Vs Assassins
In season 4, Prince Wu first lost his chance to become Earth King, then ended up on the run with only Mako to protect him. Mako, Korra, and Asami ended up as a team, and they had to pursue Prince Wu once he got himself captured.
The prince was hauled onto a train, so Mako and his allies got on board and fought Kuvira's thugs to reclaim the prince. It was a classic "train battle" sequence that ended with some serious fireworks. Mako did his duty and got the prince back safe and sound.
5 Mako & Bolin Vs Colossus
In the final battle for Republic City, Kuvira marched in with what looked like an indestructible colossus armored with platinum. But Korra's team managed to carve a hole in it, and Mako and Bolin fought their way in.
The brothers use all the bending at their disposal to take on the guards inside, and once they dispatch their armored foes, Mako uses lightning bending to overwhelm the colossus' energy core and render it practically inoperable. This buys Korra time to take out Kuvira.
4 Mako & Bolin Vs Eska & Desna
This battle took place during the lead-up to Korra's final battle with Unalaq and Vaatu. While Unalaq was working on freeing Vaatu, it was up to Eska and Desna to keep team avatar away, and they did battle with Mako and Bolin.
Mako and Bolin fought a protracted battle with the Water Tribe prince and princess, and a lot of terrific bending was done by all sides. Amusingly, after Mako and Bolin were frozen and trapped, Bolin used an emotional appeal to get himself and Mako free.
3 Mako & Korra Vs Amon
This was certainly a tense and scary fight, and Mako and Korra found themselves up against the true extent of Amon's power. The Equalist leader doesn't just erase bending; he is a bloodbender too, and he had Mako and Korra cornered.
But Mako and Korra fought back pretty well, and Mako's lightning stunned Amon to give his side an edge. Amon complimented Mako's bold move and then retaliated by taking Korra's bending... until Korra unlocked her airbending, that is.
2 Mako & Team Vs Zaheer's Squad
This battle took place one night at Zaofu, the one location in the world where Korra thought she was truly safe. Thanks to Aiwei's inside help, Zaheer's squad of four got inside, and they tried to kidnap her.
The alarm sounded, and Mako helped Korra, Bolin, and the Zaofu natives fight back in a tense, large-scale bender battle for Korra's fate. Mako did his part nicely, and ultimately, Zaheer's group was forced to withdraw, though everyone was certainly rattled by this.
1 Mako Vs Ming-Hua
Ming-Hua is the waterbender in Zaheer's squad, and she uses water to form tentacles and claws in place of normal arms. During the final clash with Zaheer in the badlands, Mako took part in the rescue effort and clashed directly with Ming-Hua.
It was a tough fight, to say the least, and Korra's very life was on the line. Mako struggled until he ended up in an underground pond, and Ming-Hua followed him there. Mako had a surprise for her: lightning bending. He used the pond's water to take Ming-Hua by surprise, and he zapped her into submission at last.
