Fans of The Vampire Diaries and The Originals got a treat Thursday night with the return of a familiar face, a Mystic Falls tradition and a deep, dark secret revealed in the newest episode of Legacies.
"Let's Just Finish the Dance" introduced Hope's ex-boyfriend, Roman, while The Salvatore Boarding School for the Young and Gifted hosted the annual Miss Mystic Falls beauty pageant, with Hope entering the pageant as a surprise entrant while wearing the dress her father Klaus gave Caroline in the first season of The Vampire Diaries. Finally, Josie got one step closer to learning about "The Merge."

After being busy dealing with MG killing Landon and the discovery that Landon's supernatural nature is that of the legendary Phoenix, Alaric completely forgot the school was this year's host for the Miss Mystic Falls pageant. Alaric also invited Roman from The Originals to come help out around the school, which caused some conflict between Hope and the recently-revived Landon, who was a bit jealous around Roman. Roman helped play a part in the death of Hope's mother on The Originals, though she would come to ultimately forgive him.
The tension between Hope and Landon exploded when Penelope revealed Hope was hiding a secret about Landon's mother. When Landon confronted Hope, he learned the memory of his mother was erased from his mind. This led Landon not to escort Hope during the competition portion of Miss Mystic Falls, with Roman stepping in to fill the void.
And speaking of Miss Mystic Falls, Lizzie had Hope replace her in the pageant, even volunteering to coach her up and allow her to wear the dress her mother once wore when she was crowned the winner. What Lizzie and Hope didn't realize is the blue dress is the same one Klaus Mikaelson, Hope's father, gave Caroline back in Season 1 of The Vampire Diaries. This was the breaking point for Hope, who got pretty emotional after learning she was wearing a dress connected to her father, along with seemingly breaking up with Landon.

Josie was the one who revealed the status of the dress to Lizzie, and she also had to say a tearful goodbye to Penelope, who was leaving The Salvatore School. Before she left, Penelope gave Josie a book full of all the secrets she gathered around the school from her magical pens introduced earlier in the episode. The pens record every single thing that's written with them. Inside the notebook are details Alaric wrote down regarding The Merge, which is when the stronger twin absorb the magical powers of their weaker sibling, leaving the weaker one dead. Caroline has been off on a secret mission to find a way to prevent the twins from undergoing The Merge, but now it appears Josie is going to find out what her parents have been hiding from her and Lizzie.
With only two episodes remaining in the freshman season of Legacies, many of the major plot points connected to The Vampire Diaries are about to come to a head.
