Even the godliest of beings can be awful, including Legacies' Ken, portrayed by Luke Mitchell. Up until now, not much has been revealed about him except that he's a malevolent patriarch to a family of gods. His children, Ben (Zane Phillips), aka Prometheus, and Jen (Piper Curda), aka Vulcan, naturally both fear him. Ken cursed Ben to a lifetime of torture and torment. As for Jen, she trapped her father and family in sarcophagi, where they remained safe and asleep. Now, he's awake.

Alaric (Matthew Davis), Hope (Danielle Rose Russell), Ben, and the rest of the Salvatore School for the Young and the Gifted's student body ran hypothetical battle scenarios against Ken, with most of them resulting in their deaths. In this week's episode, "I Wouldn't Be Standing Here If It Weren't For You," Ken finally confronts Hope in an epic brawl she may not survive. Luke Mitchell recently spoke with CBR about first impressions, battle armor, targeting Hope, and strange romances.

CBR: Between playing superhumans on The Tomorrow People and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., a terrorist on Blindspot, a military man on The Code, and a lawyer on Republic of Sarah, you are always mixing it up. What appealed to you about the role of Ken on Legacies?

Luke Mitchell: It kind of felt familiar and different at the same time. There are similarities to Roman on Blindspot. There are similarities to Lincoln on S.H.I.E.L.D. There are little bits and pieces of characters that I have played that I was able to tap into and explore further. Ken is a little bit of a sociopath, which is an aspect that I got to explore on Blindspot, but then Ken has electrical powers. He calls down lightning and uses that to his advantage. Obviously, I have some experience using electrical powers as Lincoln on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. It's interesting. It's a mix but new territory. It's super-fun because I have gotten to go to a pretty dark place with this character.

Jen describes the gods as douchebags, who are into war and destruction. What was your sense of Ken? What defines him?

Probably ego. He's the most powerful being in the universe... and he knows it. He loves it. He's all about making sure that he is loved and feared in equal parts. He is the top dog. He's at the top and wants to make sure everyone knows their place. In a nutshell, that's exactly where he is at.

Audiences haven't technically met Ken in the flesh. His first "appearance" featured him as a simulated life-sized chess piece on a game board. What did you enjoy about that introduction?

It's a great way to meet all of the cast all at once, without having to do much. There's always first-day jitters and nerves, no matter what character you are playing or what show you are on. Certainly, on a show so well established and on its fourth season, everyone knows each other so well. For me, it was great. I didn't really have to do much, and I got to meet everyone. Everyone is so lovely and welcoming, both cast and crew. Automatically, I felt right at home, despite playing the bad guy.

It was also cool because of this real ominous undertone. People are talking about what Ken is capable of, and you see this incarnation of him, but you are not really seeing him. You are giving the audience a taste of who this guy is physically and being told what he is capable of, but you don't get a sense of his personality. You don't get a sense of what he is actually going to do. It was fun to just be present, but not be Ken.

This week's episode finds Ken suited up in battle armor. What are your thoughts on his wardrobe and how it informed your character?

I absolutely love his costumes. It's probably one of my favorite things about him. He's very well-dressed. The armor is being custom-built for me. I have never really had an experience like that before. I've had so many specialized costume fittings to make this thing look so cool but also be functional at the same time. I think it fits Ken very well, although he probably doesn't really need the armor, but he likes to look good.

Jen betrayed her dad. Ben was a big disappointment. How would you describe that family dynamic, especially once they reunite?

Not healthy. We all know family dynamics can be testing and trying, even at the best of times. I am not sure this family ever really had a best of times. I'm not sure how I would be feeling if I was Ben or Jen, knowing Ken is now awake and knowing what he is capable of. I'm not sure there is any love there. Ken looks out for Ken.

As you mentioned, this role has required you to go to some dark places. How much have you enjoyed going down that rabbit hole with this character?

Playing a bad guy, in general, is fun. Going to dark places is so different than my life and who I am as a person. It's the ultimate acting challenge to step into Ken's shoes and figure out who this guy is, what he wants, and what he is willing to get it... He's willing to do anything, basically. It's just really fun.

Now that Ken is awake and on his feet, what does he actually want?

Initially, obviously, he would like to have a couple of words with his daughter, the one who tricked him. I'm not sure that is going to go incredibly well with Jen. Through that process, he discovers the Tribrid. That starts to be a bit of a challenge for his ego because the Tribrid is incredibly powerful. Ken is also incredibly powerful, and Ken really needs to be loved and adored and feared more than anything else. He needs to prove himself. He sees Hope as a threat and, therefore, threats need to be eliminated.

Hope faces off against Ken in this week's episode. What can you tease about that showdown?

Ken is not going to hold back, but he may be a little surprised that it doesn't go as easily as he would like. That just forces him to up the ante.

What else is in store for Ken in the next block of episodes?

I'm not sure there are any more flashbacks, but you will probably get bits and pieces of information through people talking about Ken. There will be an interesting side story going on, perhaps with a splash of romance. Ken is the sort of guy who has children all over the world and probably doesn't know half of them. He's a womanizer. There will be someone who will be a benefit to him, so he decides to pull out some charm and try to manipulate a little bit.

New episodes of Legacies air Thursdays on The CW.
