Legacies executive producer Brett Matthews confirmed that Season 3 of the supernatural series will deal with the aftermath of Josie Saltzman's dark magic binge.

"You'll see that play out pretty directly," Matthews told TV Insider, referring to the cost of her prior dark magic use. "It's obviously a hugely traumatic event in her life and now that it's over and she's more herself, she will have to reckon with the actions that she took."

Matthews added that Josie's experimentation with dark magic in Season 2 caused a lot of trauma for herself, her family and her friends, noting, "When you're faced with a trauma like that, can you resume normal?"

"Can you just go back into your old role?" he continued, "Or have you fundamentally changed and does that change the dynamics with her and Lizzie (Jenny Boyd) and Hope (Danielle Rose Russell) and all of her friends around her? That is definitely something you will see."

Josie Saltzman's (Kaylee Bryant) character took a dark turn in Season 2 when Professor Vardemus -- Malivore's son, Ryan Clarke, in disguise --tricked her into using dark magic. Although Josie trapped the dark magic into the mora miserium, Josie and Lizzie Saltzman's villainous uncle Kai Parker convinced Josie to break the hourglass while they were all stuck in the prison world.

When Josie returned to the real world, it appeared that Dark Josie was contained in the prison world. However, it was teased at the end of Season 2 that the Necromancer may somehow use Dark Josie to make himself more powerful. At the end of Legacies' Season 2, both Hope Mikaelson and Landon Kirby remained unconscious, and it was unclear whether either would awake. The CW recently revealed that Season 3 will find the students at The Salvatore School -- including Josie -- facing a slew of new monsters and devastating news.

In addition, it was also revealed that a musical episode called "Salvatore: The Musical!" will air during Season 3. The musical episode was initially supposed to air as part of Season 2 but was pushed because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The "Salvatore: The Musical!" episode will pay tribute to Legacies' predecessors, The Vampire Diaries and The Originals.

Legacies stars Danielle Rose Russell, Jenny Boyd, Kaylee Bryant, Quincy Fouse, Aria Shahghasemi, Peyton Alex Smith, Matt Davis, Chris Lee, Ben Levin and Leo Howard. Season 3 of Legacies premieres on Jan. 21 at 9 p.m. ET/PT on The CW.
