Legacies To Introduce a New Old-World Vampire in Season 2

The Vampire Diaries universe is filled with ancient and immortal beings from vampires to witches. In the spinoff series The Originals, it was established that the family of original vampires have each lived for more than a millennium as they were created during the Viking Age in the 10th century A.D. Showrunner Julie Plec says Season 2 will see the introduction of a new character, one who will apparently struggle in adjusting to this modern world filled with teenage drama and supernatural dangers. "We're really excited about a new character that we're introducing," she told TV Guide. "We really want to bring in an old, old, old-world vampire." She then went on to describe how the show would handle an ancient in Mystic Falls among the teenage characters.

"We made the rule for our school that the vampires who go to our school actually need to be teenagers... not hundreds of years [old] because then you get into some creepy math. But we want to introduce a vampire who kind of got desiccated when he was 17 in maybe the 15th century and now wakes up in the 21st century and realizes that all the rules of being a vampire have changed and that he does not fit in into this very modern world."

The Salvatore School for the Young and Gifted is no stranger to immortals who might pose a threat to modern human society. It will be interesting to see how this particular newcomer, wholly unfamiliar with the established rules, adjusts and how the lighthearted show handles his encounters with modern concepts.
