A leaked clip from Matt Reeves' The Batman provides fans with a first look at one of the Riddler's puzzles in action. The two-minute and 20-second clip shows Robert Pattinson's Bruce Wayne attending the mayor's funeral, where it is revealed that Gotham's district attorney has gone missing. As a commotion grows outside of the church, Bruce notices a mysterious figure on the second floor, later revealed to be Paul Dano's Riddler. Before long, a car comes crashing through the doors of the church, where the driver is revealed to be Coulson, a bomb strapped to his neck, with a note taped to his chest that reads, "To the Batman."RELATED: The Batman Director Celebrates Post-Production End With Theater Photos

Dano will portray The Batman's version of the Riddler in the upcoming film, opposite Pattinson's Bruce Wayne/Batman. In a recent interview, director Matt Reeves revealed that the Riddler was "molded in an almost Zodiac Killer sort of mode" and is bent on "killing very prominent figures in Gotham, and they are the pillars of society."

"These are supposedly legitimate figures," Reeves said. "It begins with the mayor, and then it escalates from there. And in the wake of the murders, he reveals the ways in which these people were not everything they said they were, and you start to realize there's some kind of association. And so just like Woodward and Bernstein, you've got Gordon and Batman trying to follow the clues to try and make sense of this thing in a classic kind-of-detective story way."

Pattinson recently described The Batman as a true detective-noir story, as opposed to a superhero one, saying Reeves' idea from the start was to lean into "the 'world's greatest detective aspect'" of the Dark Knight. "And, you know, normally when directors say that, they just do like a mood board, and it's just about the imagery," Pattinson said. "But I read the script, and it is! It's a detective movie. It happens all the time in the graphic novels, but it's always kind of on the backburner in the movies."

While previous trailers for The Batman prominently featured Dano's Riddler, Warner Bros.'s official synopsis for The Batman hinted at another mystery villain. In the film, Bruce Wayne will encounter the likes of Catwoman, The Penguin, Carmine Falcone and the Riddler, but the mention of an unnamed "killer" in the synopsis could tease the arrival of an entirely different character, though this has not been officially confirmed.

The Batman arrives in theaters on March 4.
