Leaked Locke & Key Trailer Offers A Look At What Might’ve Been

If you weren’t lucky enough to catch the screening last month at Comic-Con International, this leaked trailer for Locke & Key may be the closest you’ll get to seeing the adaptation of the acclaimed horror comic by Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodriguez.

Despite the quality of the source material, substantial buzz — the pilot was described as “magical” and “beautiful” — and the involvement of executive producers Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, writer Josh Friedman and director Mark Romanek, Fox rejected the series in May. Although there suggestions that Locke & Key might find a home at Syfy or The CW, those hopes were dashed in June with the dismantling of the show’s sets in Pittsburgh.

Friedman and Hill emphasized last night on Twitter that fans shouldn’t draw any conclusions from the emergence of the trailer, which was created by Fox to pitch the series to advertisers.

“To be clear, no matter what this trailer says, Fox has no current plans to air the show,” Hill wrote. “I do not know from whence this trailer came but it very much conveys the strengths of the pilot. … There is no reason to think yet that the pilot will be released or the show produced, but stranger things have happened. … Nobody should make anything of it … except that it’s pretty awesome. Like the pilot itself.”

The trailer is, indeed, pretty awesome, packed with mystery, family drama and a couple of delightful scares. Unfortunately, it only drives home what we’re missing out on, and makes Fox’s decision that much more puzzling.

Locke & Key centers on Nina Locke (Miranda Otto) and her three children Tyler (Jesse McCartney), Kinsey (Sarah Bolger) and Bode (Skylar Gaertner) who, after the murder of Nina’s husband Rendell, return to Keyhouse, the family home in Lovecraft, Massachusetts. There they encounter Dodge (Ksenia Solo), and numerous doors that can transport the mansion’s residents to other worlds or bestow them with supernatural abilities. Nick Stahl also stars as Rendell’s younger brother Duncan Locke.
