The most popular game in the world, the one that its players love to hate and hate to love, launches its 10th season today. League of Legends has certainly come a very long way over the years, and has endeared players as it has enraged many others.

As we gear up for the next season of the massively popular MOBA title, all eyes are on Riot Games. After a controversial 2019, the publisher needs a big win, and the new League push could be just what they need.

Seasons Greetings

League of Legends is a purely multiplayer game, allowing you to group with friends and strangers alike and clash with each other on the game's main map, Summoners Rift.  For the more competitive players, there's a ranking system that can be pursued.  Riot breaks up this system into various seasons, with a pre-season in between that serves as a cool off for ranked players and a chance for Riot to implement bigger changes.

Each season starts around the beginning of the year and ends around October or November.  Players have that much time to grind out ranked games, where wins earn you points that accumulate into a better ranking.  Getting to a certain rank by the end of the season nets you rewards per tier, and the best rewards are at higher ranks. It can be both exhilarating and frustrating, as you go back and forth, winning and losing games as you try to inch your way up the ladder. For many players, it's the main way to play, so the new season being right around the corner is a big deal to a huge swath of the fan-base.

The Hype

Riot Games has been building up the community in recent days to build excitement for the new season. Riot has been releasing a series of silhouette posters with a countdown to the season start, which goes a long way to building some tension as players get ready to start competing.  A quick video showcasing the goals Riot is aiming for over the course of the next year was also released, as well as a few cinematic clips sprinkled in for fun.

Today Riot blew the lid off that with a full cinematic trailer. Riot has become well known for releasing epic cinematics similar to Blizzard Entertainment, and this one was no exception. Titled "Warriors," the clip showcases many fan-favorite characters like Lux and Caitlyn as they overcome huge odds to achieve victory. Any League player is familiar with the rush of victory, a feeling that League players will go to any length to obtain. Some newer characters make appearances in the clip as well, such as Sylas (conspicuously dressed in his newly released cosmetic skin) and Kai'sa.

The cinematic works perfectly to get players excited to get back out on the rift. Many fans wish Riot would make these mini-movies more frequently, but the more limited format gives them a lot more impact when one finally drops.

Riot Games knows exactly how to get the community excited, and the player base is 100% here for it.  Hopefully, that momentum will continue today, when League of Legends Season 10 finally releases.
