Laurie Metcalf will join Season 3 of Supergirl as Winn Schott’s (Jeremy Jordan) estranged mothers. Supergirl fans were already introduced to Winn’s father, Winslow Schott Sr. (Henry Czerny), back in Season 1. Winslow proved to be quite the opposite of Winn, as he ended up revealing himself to be the Toymaker, a villain who committed atrocious acts with weapons concealed in toys.

There’s no telling if Metcalf’s character will share the same homicidal tendencies as Winslow. The casting announcement was first made in an interview with Vanity Fair. Metcalf’s reason for taking the role is actually pretty endearing – she wants to make sure her daughter can meet her idol, Melissa Benoist, the series’ star.

Metcalf is perhaps best known for her role as Jackie Harris on Roseanne, the younger sister of Roseanne Barr’s titular Roseanne. Metcalf played the character for nearly ten years – Roseanne ran from 1988 to 1997. The series is slated to return on ABC in 2018.

Airing Mondays at 8 p.m. ET/PT on The CW, Supergirl stars Melissa Benoist as the Girl of Steel, David Harewood as Martian Manhunter, Mehcad Brooks as Jimmy Olsen, Chyler Leigh as Alex Danvers and Jeremy Jordan as Winn Schott, with appearances by Calista Flockhart as Cat Grant and Tyler Hoechlin as Superman.
