Another day, another picture from The Wolverine. The latest comes courtesy of the film’s Twitter account, and shows us a glimpse into the new, brooding Logan we’ll meet in this Fox movie. “The past is always behind you, but the memories still remain,” the caption reads. While that might sound a bit melodramatic, it’s pretty much in line with what we’ve heard is the plot of the James Mangold film.
During a recent interview with Empire, producer Hugh Parker explained how memories actually will force Logan to head to Japan, which is the main setting for this movie.
“What you’ll come to find is that this is someone he spent prison time with in Nagasaki. And the legacy of that experience — effectively Logan saved him — is that this man is on his deathbed, and is looking to give him a gift, to thank him for the life he’s had,” Parker said. “But this gift draws Logan into a very complex and very unexpected world within both contemporary Japan and, to some extent, the feudal history of Japan. He’s so in isolation, so out of his element. It’s a much more powerful distillation of his character than you’ve seen before.”
The Wolverine, which opens July 26, also stars Will Yun Lee, Svetlana Khodchenkova, Hiroyuki Sanada, Hal Yamanouchi, Tao Okamoto, Rila Fukushima and Brian Tee. Here’s the official plot synopsis:
Based on the celebrated comic book arc, this epic action-adventure takes Wolverine, the most iconic character of the X-Men universe, to modern day Japan. Out of his depth in an unknown world he faces his ultimate nemesis in a life-or-death battle that will leave him forever changed. Vulnerable for the first time and pushed to his physical and emotional limits, he confronts not only lethal samurai steel but also his inner struggle against his own immortality, emerging more powerful than we have ever seen him before.
