The search for the next big-screen Spider-Man may be nearing the finish line. A Friday report from Birth. Movies. Death., citing Sony sources, states that the candidate field is down to two: Tom Holland and Charlie Rowe.

Holland was named as one of three contenders in an earlier report from the Meet the Movie Press, along with Charlie Plummer and Matthew Lintz. Rowe was not named in that report, but was said to have screen tested for the role last month.

Rowe, 19, appeared in 2007's "The Golden Compass" and as a main character in Fox's short-lived "Red Band Society," which ended its run earlier this year. Holland is also 19, and both actors are British.

No official casting announcement has yet been made from Sony Pictures or Marvel Studios regarding the role, or the reported candidates. The new live-action Spidey is expected to debut in 2016's "Captain America: Civil War," before starring in a solo joint production from Sony and Marvel, scheduled for release on July 28, 2017.
