Latest 'Jem and the Holograms' Trailer Shifts Gears, Slightly

The first trailer for Universal's film adaptation of '80s cartoon "Jem and the Holograms" drew criticism back in May for dropping any trace of sci-fi fun, and instead presenting what looked like a standard, "Crossroads"-esque coming-of-age story with music stardom as a backdrop -- basically, far short of truly outrageous.

The latest trailer switches gears at least a bit, introducing a robot named S1N3RG.Y, built by Jem's late father -- the movie's version of Synergy, the hologram-projecting computer from the animated series, bringing the adaptation closer to the source material. There's still a One Direction song in the trailer, though; either a positive or a negative depending on your perspective.

Directed by Jon M. Chu and starring Aubrey Peeples as Jem/Jerrica Benton, "Jem and the Holograms" is scheduled for release on Oct. 23.
