A promotional poster for the upcoming second season of HBO's hit post-apocalyptic drama series, The Last of Us, might tease the live-action debut of a controversial character from the original video game, Abby Anderson. To help fans get through the first week of not having new episodes, The Last of Us co-creator Neil Druckmann shared an illustration on his official Twitter assuring fans about Season 2. Yet, the image seems to tease a certain character, showing an arm that matches Abby's muscular physique, as seen in the 2020 sequel video game The Last of Us Part II. While he did not specifically confirm the identity of the owner of the arm, the creator further assured work for the next season was already well underway. "No [The Last of Us] on HBO tonight," he wrote. "But Season 2 is already on its way! Endure and survive!"Related: Did The Last Of Us' Ellie Really Need To Die for a Cure?

Who Is The Last of Us' Abby Anderson?

In the original video game, Abby Anderson was the daughter of the Firefly head surgeon Jerry Anderson, who was revealed to have been one of the victims of Joel Miller's rampage at the end of The Last of Us Part I. Unable to move past the death of her father, she would eventually join the Washington Liberation Front and track down Joel several years later, at which point she brutally beat and executed him with a golf club. Abby's murder of Joel subsequently motivated Ellie Williams to chase after her in pursuit of her own revenge, which set the events of the sequel into motion.

Abby's introduction in The Last of Us Part II was one of the most polarizing elements of the sequel and still remains a controversial subject for the game's fanbase. While some fans of the franchise praised her character as a masterful subversion of expectations for the sequel, others were outraged at her actions and particularly dissatisfied with the conclusion of her story. Voice actor Laura Bailey, who provided the voice for Abby, even received threatening messages from furious fans in the weeks following the sequel's release.

At the time of writing, it has not been revealed if Abby will make her live-action debut in Season 2 of the HBO adaptation nor who might be chosen to play the controversial character. However, more news for the upcoming season may make its way to fans sooner than expected, as star Pedro Pascal previously claimed it was possible that Season 2 will enter full production before the end of 2023.

All episodes of The Last of Us are available to stream on HBO Max.
