Naughty Dog's The Last of Us Part II is celebrating a record-breaking win, as the survival horror game has just become Sony's fastest-selling PlayStation 4 exclusive of all time.

Sony Interactive Entertainment Senior Vice President of PlayStation Worldwide Marketing Eric Lempel confirmed The Last of Us Part II is officially the "fastest-selling first-party PS4 exclusive" after it sold four million copies in just three days. Naughty Dog Vice President and Director of The Last of Us Part II Neil Druckman also celebrated the news, saying, "We are so immensely grateful to the millions of fans around the world that have played The Last of Us Part II and shared their experiences with us over the last week. We set out to tell a new kind of story, one that deals with difficult themes and would challenge you in unexpected ways. Hearing how the experience has resonated with so many of you and witnessing the type of thoughtful discussions it has sparked has been so incredible. We’ve also been so inspired by your creativity — whether it’s your gorgeous Photo Mode shots, jaw-dropping gameplay GIFs, or the songs you’ve recorded using Ellie’s guitar."

"The Last of Us Part II was made possible thanks to the efforts of the hundreds of talented and passionate developers here at Naughty Dog," he continued. "We can imagine no greater honor than seeing that same passion mirrored by the people playing it. Thank you for helping us reach this amazing milestone."

The news means The Last of Us Part II has surpassed Insomniac's Spider-Man from 2018 (3.3 million copies) over the same three-day period. News that The Last of Us Part II has taken the crown might not come as a huge surprise considering the game's European preorders were higher than Spider-Man.

Following the success of 2013's The Last of Us, which itself was one of the best-selling games of all time, Naughty Dog has been working on the highly anticipated sequel. Although The Last of Us Part II has been hit by several scandals and a slew of delays, the latest sales figures are a testament to the legacy of the first game and the next chapter.
