A year after the release of Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Justin Theroux revealed his cameo as Canto Bight's master codebreaker was originally intended to be a much larger role.

While promoting On the Basis of Sex, Theroux was asked about his appearance in the Star Wars sequel. "Rian called me a couple of years before making it, and said, 'Hey, there's this character, blah, blah, blah.' And I think over the course of the making the character became reduced, as they sort of locked in on what the overall thing was," Theroux told Cinema Blend. "Then he sort of called me last minute, I'd sort of forgotten about it, and then he called me last minute and said, 'Hey, it's really essentially a cameo, and sort of a punchline. Would you like to come in and play this part?' And I thought, 'Sure, that'd be...' I mean, come on!"

Briefly seen playing casino games while Finn and Rose sought someone able to break the First Order's codes, Theroux's codebreaker never actually joins with the duo, instead continuing to gamble while the two are arrested by Canto Bight authorities. While that is the extent of Theroux's role in the film, it would be interesting to know more about what was originally planned for him or if his larger role was given to Benicio Del Toro's DJ.

Rian Johnson’s Star Wars: The Last Jedi is available now on streaming platforms, Blu-ray and 4k Ultra HD. The film stars Mark Hamill, Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Adam Driver, Oscar Isaac, Andy Serkis, Gwendoline Christie, Kelly Marie Tran, Laura Dern and the late Carrie Fisher.
