WARNING: The following contains spoilers for the story "Future State: Black Adam: The End of the Beginning" from Future State: Suicide Squad #2 by Jeremy Adams, Fernando Pasarin, Oclair Albert & Jeromy Cox, on sale now

The Unkindness has been revealed throughout Future State to be perhaps the single greatest threat in the history of the DC Universe, working to wipe out every major dimension within the distant future. That includes the future's Quintessence, which is revealed to have changed radically to reflect the eons that have been passed since the modern-day.

Future State just revealed the roster of the distant future's Quintessence, hinting which present-day DC characters have important fates to play out down the line.

Future State Quintessence

Future State has teased that by the 853rd Century, the DC Universe be confronted by the ultimate threat -- the Unkindness, a dark version of the Teen Titan Raven who's been corrupted by the Four Riders of the Apocalypse. Almost the entire galaxy has been consumed by her darkness, with even the likes of Golden Superman not being enough to contend with her power and reach. Only a handful of beings even survive the initial assault from the Unkindness, with Black Adam, Immortal Man, Wonder Woman, and Gold Beetle barely using the Blue Beetle Scarab to escape the wrath of a corrupted Justice Legion. The group ends up traveling alongside the ageless Phantom Stranger, making their way to the Tower of Fate -- which now remains the last bastion of magic in the universe.

There, the heroes call for aid from the Quintessence. The Quintessence is the name for a group of higher beings who effectively serve as an alliance of the greatest powers of good in the cosmos. In the present day, the Quintessence is composed of the New Genesis Highfather, the Greek Goddess Hera, the Phantom Stranger, the Spectre, the Wizard, and the Guardian of the Universe, Ganthet. The Quintessence remains one of the most powerful forces in the universe even in this distant future, although the roster has been shifted over the years. Phantom Stranger, Spectre, and the Wizard are still among their number -- although the Spectre's goatee suggests that in the ensuing years, Crispus Allen has ended up as the Spectre again.

Highfather has been replaced by former Justice League member Barda, who is now the Highmother of New Genesis. Hera no longer stands with them, in turn, replaced by Hippolyta -- Queen of the Amazons and mother of Wonder Woman. Finally, Ganthet has also been replaced by a surprising figure: Sinestro. The former Green Lantern has been consistently one of the most dangerous antagonists the Green Lantern Corps has ever dealt with. But in the distant future, Sinestro has accepted his place as the last of the "Wielders of Light," wearing a cloak that features elements of the Sinestro Corps symbol but also seems to incorporate other colors.

The group greets the surviving heroes and initially plans to remake the universe -- and then use their powers to right the wrongs committed by the Unkindness. But the Immortal Man throws a wrench into this plan, revealing the Unkindness had offered him the freedom of a final death if he betrayed the Quintessence. Becoming a portal for her and her forces, Immortal Man is killed in the act once and for all -- and is quickly followed by the Quintessence and the rest of the magical heroes, with only Black Adam surviving thanks to a final sacrifice by the Wizard.

Even if this version of the Quintessence is defeated, it's interesting to see these as the final fates of major DC figures like Barda and Hippolyta -- and especially for Sinestro, who remains a villain in the present-day and was even recently a member of the Legion of Doom. This suggests there's still hope for the character to eventually regain the heroic edge he'd once had. This could even still prove to be the Quintessence of the future, depending on what the future Black Adam does now that he's been trapped again in the present-day. This all suggests at the great futures to come for those heroes -- and even one villain.
