How would you classify something as the worst? What parameters would you use to define or measure it? For MyAnimeList (MAL), it’s calculated through a weighted average of hundreds of scores between 1-10 submitted by anime lovers.

To the average person, the worst could mean a severe lack of quality in the story, script, animation, music, etc. But through the process of creating this list, one thing became abundantly clear - disappointment is a large contributing factor to something being “the worst”. And while some of these anime absolutely deserve to be here, others, upon viewing, absolutely do not. But on MAL scores alone, these are considered the 10 worst sci-fi anime of the decade.

10 ‘Promised Town’–2016 (5.42 on MAL)

Only 166 people have seen this and rated it on MAL, somehow giving it a score of 5.42 which is woefully low. Promised Town is an incredibly impressive and ambitious CG3D project created by IKEDA. It’s a one-episode ONA lasting just under 5 minutes.

The low score is perplexing given the quality of animation. The anime might have actually benefitted from not having a story - it didn’t seem to fit well at all. This property might also have benefitted from more episodes; however, there have been zero updates since this ONA aired in 2016. Maybe those two reasons are why the score is low.

9 ‘Scared Rider Xechs’–2016 (5.30 on MAL)

Scared Rider Xechs was originally a 2010 PlayStation 2 title that was adapted into a 2016 anime. One can only hope the game is better because this anime is a mess. It’s not truly awful, but it is pretty bad.

This is Power Rangers with no Megazords and a lame music/band subplot slapped on. The characters have fairly boilerplate personalities and odd face designs, even for an anime. The main plot reads like a fever dream - nothing made sense even after watching the first two episodes. Surprisingly, given the quality of the rest of the anime, the animation and art are splendid.

8 ‘Master Of Torque’–2014 (5.24 on MAL)

Master of Torque is a four-episode ONA made for Yamaha motorcycles and produced by Y.O.U.C. This producer’s inclusion in making this anime is hilarious by itself. Between 1998-2014, Y.O.U.C produced 77 titles. This is the only one that is not hentai! Considering this ONA is the last title produced by Y.O.U.C—inferring it possibly bankrupted them—that means they produced 76 hentai before this and were still selected by Yamaha for Master of Torque. Baffling.

As for the anime, even if this is just a motorcycle advertisement, it’s a bad one. The CGI for the motorcycles just wasn’t there yet. The anime’s story also makes no sense. The drop in animation quality from episode one to episode two is so unbelievable it borders on impressive and the fourth episode has a shaky CGI cam so bad it will give you motion sickness. This anime deserves to be here.

7 ‘Pastel Memories’–2019 (5.20 on MAL)

This is one of those “disappointing” anime mentioned in the first paragraph. Does this deserve a 5.20? Probably not. But you can understand how it got here - it really ruins a great show idea.

In Pastel Memories, the world is slowly losing its moe culture (kind of like that Steins;Gate arc). It turns out a supernatural force is behind it, wiping people’s memories of anime, manga, etc. The girls in the show combat this by transporting themselves into the anime/manga and defeating said supernatural force. The show attempts to parody these properties the girls go into but does a very poor job of it. The jokes don’t land, the parody is often lazy, and the writing and animation are sub-par. It’s truly a shame because, on paper, it is a tremendous idea.

6 ‘Pac-World’–2014-2015 (5.20 on MAL)

Yes. This is a Pac-man anime - the same Pac-man whose arcade game turns 40 this year. This anime lasted for 52 episodes at 25 minutes an episode... unbelievable.

The overall story goes like this. An evil being named Betrayus from the Netherworld is releasing a ghost army into Pac-World. The president of this world tells our heroes about a prophecy foretelling a round, yellow citizen who will help save their world. Enter Pac-man and his two friends, Cyli and Spiral, as they go around and save Pac-World from Betrayus and deal with the issues of being teenagers. Again, 52 episodes, 25 minutes each.

5 ‘The Laws Of The Universe: Part 0’–2015 (5.12 on MAL)

The Laws of the Universe: Part 0 is a sci-fi and philosophical flick. A group of students discovers aliens exist, that is to say, many different races of aliens exist; some good and some bad. It's up to these five students to start a human-alien discourse in order to help save Earth and advance it galactically.

While this movie is rather enjoyable, it really drags at times. And with a two-hour runtime, it can really stretch out your day. The animation, alien life, and philosophical concepts are all terrific. It's too bad 567 people don't agree.

4 ‘Mobile Suit Gundam: Twilight Axis’–2017 (5.02 on MAL)

This one is complicated. Every review lambasts this anime—it is despised. Chronologically, this takes place between Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn and Mobile Suit Gundam F91.

Twilight Axis consists of five 3-minute episodes and a 9-minute final episode. It also took nearly three months to air those six episodes. The gaps between episodes must have felt monstrous and thrown off all the momentum the show had. Seriously though, the anime is gorgeous—better animated than 90% of what we watch now. The music is great. The story is non-linear and not anything special but we'd argue that this is not a 5.02. This is not the fourth-worst sci-fi anime of the decade, not by light-years. Go out and decide for yourself.

3 ‘Double Circle’–2013 (4.98 on MAL)

Double Circle is a six-episode ONA courtesy of TOSHIBA. And while it isn’t a bad effort, it’s just not good. This anime can be boiled down to, “Captain Planet with robots, yet boring.” Our four heroes represent Toshiba’s efforts in the Solar, Wind, Green, and Water energy sectors to combat pollution and/or societal decay (it’s never really explained what they’re fighting).

The first episode also contains an amusing moment for us future folk as the alien girl who is supposed to help save the Earth is enthralled by a plastic bendy straw. That moment is later one-upped in the third episode when the villain is defeated due to Tomato DNA GPS technology. Yes, you did read that correctly.

2 'Ladyspo'–2018 (4.31 on MAL)

Of all the sins Ladyspo commits, and there are many, the largest one is ruining a great premise. This anime revolves around a ragtag crew of women who go around and compete in different sports across the universe. Doesn't that sound awesome?!

The lack of quality here is immediately apparent. The opening shot of Episode 1 starts on the women's spaceship. In the next shots, we see two of our main crew on the toilet, really. The animation is laughable—the whole show is a series of still frames with an oval showing a talking face, lip flaps moving indiscriminately. Each episode is thankfully only four minutes long.

1 'The Irresponsible Galaxy☆Tylor'–2017 (4.13 on MAL)

Oh, Captain Tylor, how far you've fallen. While this anime might be an abhorrent follow-up to it's 90's counterpart, a 4.13 is harsh. Unlike Ladyspo in the #2 spot, this is actually animated at least!

No, this show isn't good, but it's far from the worst anime on this list and the worst sci-fi of the decade. However, Galaxy clearly enraged the fans of The Irresponsible Captain Tylor. They waited 20 years for a sequel and got this; their vitriol is somewhat justified. So, here it will sit, and here it will stay - the worst sci-fi anime of the 2010s.
