With critically-praised roles in Get Out, Sorry to Bother You and Atlanta, Lakeith Stanfield could be forgiven for wanting to take a break.
But there’s one villainous role in particular that he really wants to play–the Joker.
In an interview with Deadline, Stanfield admitted that while the acclaim is great, it was seeing people dressed up like Cassius, his character from Sorry to Bother You that really excited him. And, if he has his way, people will be dressing up like his version of the Clown Prince of Crime, too.
“I want people to dress up as me as black Joker, when that inevitably happens,” Stanfield said. “I just think there are so many things that haven’t been touched yet in terms of how the performance can be delivered.” He added, “When I make the movie myself.”
Whether he’s the one to make it happen or not, Stanfield said that, thanks to movies like Sorry to Bother You, he thinks the possibility is closer to reality than not.
“The sci-fi world meets black people – I think that’s a beautiful juxtaposition. To be fully realized, interesting characters, not always having to be, ‘Hey man! I just come home from church!’” he said. “Now, we can play a little bit, too.”
Lakeith Stanfield can currently be seen in The Girl in the Spider's Web, in theaters now, and is expected to return for the third season of Atlanta, debuting on FX sometime in 2019.
Joaquin Phoenix will play the Joker in director Todd Phillips' Joker, which is set to be released on Oct. 4, 2019.
