Writer L.L. McKinney shared a side-by-side comparison of Nubia's first-ever appearance in DC Comics -- in a full suit of armor -- with her brand-new Future State character design."I had to. I HAD to," McKinney wrote on Twitter. The images she shared depict Nubia's first 1973 appearance, where she accused Diana of being a "usurper," claiming, "There is only one Wonder Woman! I am Wonder Woman!" McKinney called back to this iconic entrance in Nubia's newest concept art for her Future State: Immortal Wonder Woman run, written by McKinney and drawn by Alitha Martinez, wherein the writer points out Nubia's dialogue: "And I am Wonder Woman."RELATED: Future State: Wonder Woman's Debut Takes Her Into a New Underworld

McKinney continued, "As always, shout out to [Martinez], [Mark Morales] and [Emilio Lopez] for putting in the [fire] to bring our girl to life. She looks like this because of how great THEY are at what they do."

Nubia was created by Robert Kanigher and Don Heck and first appeared in 1973 for Wonder Woman #204. She appears in the issue as a rival to Diana with the intent to battle her in the arena for the official title of Wonder Woman. Of course, it was later revealed that Nubia was under the influence of Diana’s greatest villain: Ares.

Over the years, Nubia's story has changed and evolved like many superheroes -- in some versions, she is Diana's sister, in others, she is another Wonder Woman (i.e., Wonder Woman of the Floating Islands). In 1999, for example, she returned as N’ubia, an Amazonian warrior tasked with guarding the entrance to the underworld.

Nubia will be one of two stories in the Future State: Immortal Wonder Woman storyline. The other will be Immortal Wonder Woman #1, which will follow Diana Prince as she battles the Darkseid. This issue will be written by Becky Cloonan and Michael Conrad, drawn by Jen Bartel.

Nubia is one of many characters who will be reborn in the DC Future State publishing initiative that began this January, a two-month exploration of possible futures for the DC Universe and the legacies of DC's greatest heroes. One of those characters includes the debut of a Brazilian Wonder Woman named Yara Flor, who has taken up the title in the absence of Princess Diana.

Future State: Immortal Wonder Woman #1 goes on sale in January 2021 from DC.
